Snow was covering the city. The last sight of autumn had disappeared. It got colder than thirty degrees. Many streets and homes were decorated with colorful lights and ornaments. Christmas was only a few days away. We have gotten Christmas shopping for presents, decorations, food and treats for the Christmas party we were throwing. We already had the Christmas tree decorated. Hazel and I haven't gone to Ruff's doghouse because of Christmas coming soon. I was still waiting for the letter from Dad for Christmas. I really wanted him to come.

Three days before Christmas Eve, it was a very cold night. Our backyard was completely covered in snow. Aunt Cynthia, Hazel and I were in the kitchen making some hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies. Kyle was at the airport, picking up Sadie. I wanted to welcome her with some cookie we made ourselves. I was really excited. Christmas is my favorite holiday. As soon as I heard the front door open, I couldn't hold on any longer.

"Hey, what's up everyone?" Sadie said as she walked in.

"Sadie! You're here!" I exclaimed. I jumped on her arms.

"Hey, Ruby, it's been a while. Man, you've grown a bit since I last saw you," she replied. Kyle walked in covered in flakes of snow.

"Sadie, oh, how I've missed you. How's college?" Aunt Cynthia replied.

"Pretty good," she responded.

"Hey, Sadie," Hazel said.

"Oh, hey," she replied.

"Now, were all together," Kyle said.

"No, were not. Dad's still not here. And what about the rest of the family?" I replied.

"Ruby, we still haven't heard from your father yet," Aunt Cynthia sighed.

"Don't worry. I'm pretty sure Dad will come before Christmas. He probably just wants to surprise us. Besides, he loves us," Sadie said.

"Now, who wants hot chocolate and cookies?" Aunt Cynthia asked.

We all got some hot chocolate and cookies and ate together. Sadie got to talk about her experiences in college. We heard all of her stories from dealing with multiple projects in a day to making crazy friends. It was nice to finally see her after two years. She used to live with Dad, Hazel and I when we lived back in Texas. She moved on campus after getting accepted into a university that was an hour away. We still got to see her every once in a while when she had the chance to visit us. However, I was just glad she had a fun time over there.

It was getting late and we were getting ready to sleep. Sadie still had her luggage in the living room. I wanted to be nice to her, so I let her sleep in my room. She moved all of her belongings there and placed them in a corner of my room. She brought her own sleeping bag and got comfy on the floor. Hazel and I were ready settled to go to sleep. The lamp was still on.

"So, do you guys like it here?" Sadie asked.

"Oh, yeah, we do," I replied.

"What have you done since you moved here?" she asked.

"Well, we've explored Boston. I've made so many friends at school. I love it here," I replied. In reality, I didn't want to tell her that Hazel and I have been working for a famous game host for the past six months.

"Well, I've been with her the entire time," Hazel said.

"So, Ruby, is there anyone you're interested in?" she smiled.

"What, no," I lied.

"Haha, I'm just messin' with you," she chuckled.

"Haha, very funny," I replied sarcastically.

"Hey, so, did you guys know that I'm moving here with you guys?" she asked.

"Yeah, Kyle already told us," Hazel replied.

"Darn it, Kyle. I told him to keep it a secret from you guys," she sighed.

"Well, we were going to find out at some point," I said.

"Yeah, I know. We should go to sleep now," she replied.

"Okay, then," I turned off the lights.

"Goodnight, weirdos," she said.

"Goodnight, lunatic," I replied.

The next day, it was a nice winter day. It was cloudy but there was plenty of snow for building a snowman. We got up and got dressed that day. We decided to head downtown for some last minute shopping. We went to several different stores around Boston. Sadie got to know more about the city so she would get use it by the time she moved. We even found the school she was transferring to. The whole time, I did think about Ruff, Blossom, and Chet. I felt bad for leaving them for a few days. Ruff did give us a couple days off. We were going back after New Year's though. Most importantly, I thought about Dad. I was really close to him and ever since Sadie went to college, I spend a lot of time with him. He taught me a few of his hockey tricks. It was great.

We got home at around six o'clock. It was already dark outside. The temperature has been slowly dropping throughout the day. We had a lot of shopping bags with us. I had my own money I got for my birthday, so I got to spend some of it. I spend some of it on myself, and some of it for my family. I just wanted to thank them for taking care of me. After we arrived home, I decided to check the mailbox. I slowly opened it and found only one envelope inside it. I got it out and read the information. This was it. The letter I've been waiting for. It was from Dad. I ran back inside.

"Guys, it's here!" I shouted.

"What's here?" Kyle asked.

"The letter from Dad!" I replied.

"Well, come on, open it," Sadie demanded.

I went to the kitchen and took off my warm winter gloves. The letter was sealed pretty tight, so I had to rip it from the sides. I pulled out a piece of paper that was folded inside the envelope. I opened it up to read the printed letter. It was a long paragraph about Christmas. Halfway there, I realized what he was trying to say. Apparently, he wasn't coming to Boston. According to the letter, he can't come. I didn't even finish the letter when I put it down.

"What does it say?" Hazel asked.

"He's... Not coming," I sighed.

"Let me see that," Kyle said. He read the entire thing.

"So, Phill isn't coming," Aunt Cynthia replied.

"I really wanted him to come," I sobbed.

"Oh, it says that he can't come because the only plane that was flying to Boston was canceled. There won't be another one until next week," Kyle said.

"It's not his fault," Sadie replied.

"I know, but still. It won't be the same without him," I said.

"I wanted Dad to come too, to be honest," Sadie responded.

"We all did. But you know what?" Aunt Cynthia replied.

"What?" I sobbed.

"Even though he won't be with us, he'll still love us. Besides, we'll get to see him again someday. I know he'll come someday," Aunt Cynthia explained.

"I guess so," I replied.

"We're here for you," Sadie said.

"Now, let's get everything out away for Christmas," Aunt Cynthia replied.

I instantly felt a bit better. We got everything cleaned up for the party in two days. We invited close neighbors over and Sunt Cynthia invited a few of her coworkers over as well. During the party, we all had a great time together. I got to meet a few new neighborhood friends. It did get my mind off Dad for a while. I just hoped that someday, he'll see how much I've changed.
