"Athena? Are you home?" I said as I knocked on the door. A woman opened the door.
"Oh, Ruby, what a surprise to see you here," she replied.
"Hi, Mrs. Flores. Is Athena here?" I responded.
"Well, of course. Come on, she'll be ready in a few minutes."
I came into the house and we were in the living room. The TV was on and commercials were on. The house smelled like pasta and there were clothes on the floor. The living room had these glass decorations of swans everywhere.
"She's in her room if you want to see her," her mother said.
I went to her room which was downstairs and noticed the door was closed. I knocked multiple times.
"Athena? Are you almost ready?"
"Yeah, you can come in, actually. I'm just cleaning my room," she replied. I opened the door and saw her picking up books from the floor and placing them on a shelf. "Sorry about the mess. My mom wanted me to clean my room before I left."
"Yeah, sure. Anyway, are you ready for this?" I asked.
"Well, this is the first time were ever hanging out, just the two of us. Well, why not? Just let me finish up." She straightened her bed sheet. "Okay, let's go." We were about to head to the front door.
"You're leaving so soon?" Mrs. Flores said to us.
"Yeah, Mom. I finished cleaning my room. What else do you want me to do?" Athena replied.
"Oh, I don't know, aren't you going to kiss your mother goodbye?"
"Fine," she sighed. She walked towards her mom and kissed her cheek. "Bye, Mom."
"Bye, babycakes, I love you!"
"Mom!" Athena hollered.
"Oh, I'm sorry. You don't like it when I call you that."
"Bye." She shut the door behind us. "I'm sorry you had to see that. Anyway, what restaurant are we going to, again?"
"Winry's Diner," I replied.
"Man, I haven't been there in a long time. I wonder what they have been up to these days," she replied.
"They've added more items on their menu. My family goes there almost every Sunday."
"I'm already having cravings."
"Me too. I'll race you there." I immediately started running down the sidewalk.
"Hey, no fair!" She started running after me.
We kept on running until we ran the whole two blocks to get there. We finally made it to the small restaurant with the same name. I started slowing down when I was almost to the front door. Athena didn't stop running; she ended up bumping into me when she got there.
"First," I said, gasping for air.
"You started without me," she gasped.
"I told you I would race you. Anyway, we're here."
I opened the door for Athena and she went inside before I did. Upon entering, we were hit with the smell of cooked grease. There were already a few tables occupied. A man wearing a suit and came to greet us.
"Good afternoon. My name is Kevin I'll be your waiter for today. Do you need a table for two?" Kevin replied.
"Yeah, it's just the two of us, " I replied.
"Alright, then. Follow me." We followed the waiter to the back of the restaurant. We were seated in a booth and he handed the menus to us. We opened up the menus to look at our options. "What would you like to drink?"
"I guess I'll take a glass of lemonade," Athena replied.
"And for you?" The waiter turned to me.
"Iced tea, please."
"I'll be right back with your drinks." He left the and went straight to the kitchen.
"Okay, they really changed the structure of the tables here. They look so new," Athena replied.
"Yeah, they added new tables over a year ago," I replied. "So, what do you wanna order?"
"Hmm, I'll look at their new items here, " she responded.
"I know what I want. I'll just order a hamburger with fries."
"Hey, look. They're selling chicken and waffles now. I'm getting that."
The waiter came back with two glasses of our beverages. He placed them on the table and pulled out a notepad and a pen.
"Are you ladies to order?" Kevin asked.
"I'll have the classic burger with the fries."
"I would like chicken and waffles."
"It's that all?"
"Yeah," Athena replied.
"Okay, I'll be back with your orders." The waiter went back to the kitchen.
"So, what do you want to take about?" I asked.
"Let's talk about... each other," Athena replied.
"What about us?" I questioned.
"Well, it's about what we told each other."
"Okay?"
"How do you know?"
"About what?" I asked.
"You know..."
"Oh. Well, it's hard to talk about. The best explanation I can give is I never had a crush on a boy. Don't get me wrong, I've been friends with many boys, but I never liked them."
"I know how you feel. I have had a crush on a girl before. Next thing I knew, I ended up having a crush on a boy. I was confused about who I was. I still haven't told my parents. I don't know how they would react."
"Me too. My dad doesn't want me to bring a boy home. He would freak out. He told me I can't have a boyfriend until I'm thirty! I don't know how he would react," I replied.
"Okay, now that's the definition of an overprotective father. At least he cares about you," she said.
"Would you look at that. We have something in common."
"Yeah, it seems like we were... made for each other, " she whispered.
"What was that?" I snapped.
"Nothing, don't worry about it."
The waiter came toward our table with plates of food. He placed everything on the table and then left. We spent the next hour chatting about our lives. We had a great time just getting to know each other more than we would in school. We both listened to each other and tried to ask questions for each other. I was shocked that I found someone I was able to relate so much. The best part is that we accepted each other, despite our slight differences. I wondered if it was the beginning of an amazing phase...
