Aunt Cynthia, Hazel, Kyle and I were in the car, driving downtown. We got up at six in the morning on a warm summer day trying to prepare for a new adjustment in the house. There was a bunch of old belongings that Aunt Cynthia had in an almost empty room. We threw everything out yesterday. However, there was already a bed and a couple of drawers we decided to keep.
Upon arriving at the airport, Aunt Cynthia had a bunch of balloons and a bright neon sign that said: "Welcome to Boston". I was excited. All of us were going to reunite after a long time. I haven't lived with all of my siblings in one home ever since Kyle left for college and came to Boston.
"I'm finally going to be able to my little niece again. It's been years since I last saw her," Aunt Cynthia said.
"We saw her in December, " Hazel replied.
"No one asked for your opinion," she sassed.
"Guys, I know this is really exciting for all of us, but we need to make her feel welcome in this large city. She needs to learn how to get around the streets. We need to help her, not embarrass her," Kyle said.
"Didn't she tell us that her new college was like forty minutes away from home?" I asked.
"Yeah, which means we have to help her find an everyday pathway for her every day to get to school," he replied.
"I mean, Hazel and I are familiar with street names in Boston," I said.
"Ruby, how about you let the adults handle everything, okay?" Aunt Cynthia signed.
"Guys, I'm not a baby anymore. I'm almost a teenager now."
"That's no excuse. You're still and you'll always be Phill's youngest,"
Kyle drove past a sign that said "Boston Airport". We went through several tunnels and gates when we finally drove to the front entrance. My brother quickly found a parking spot and we all got out of the car. Aunt Cynthia was hold up the sign in front of her while I got to hold the multicolor balloons. We went inside and had to go through metal detectors. After that, we had to wait in there for an hour until Sadie's plane arrived. We decided to go ahead and get some food and snacks while we waited for her. I saw many people being reunited by their families and it reminded me of coming here for the first time. I still couldn't believe that was over a year ago. Time sure does flies. However, it felt like we were waiting for her plane to show up for an eternity when it was only two hours.
"Attention! Flight 253 has arrived. Repeat. Flight 253 has arrived. Thank you," the speaker announced.
"That's her plane number. She's finally here!" Kyle exclaimed.
We all got up and started to stand by each other. Aunt Cynthia was holding up the sign in front of her when we saw Sadie walking up to us with multiple suitcases. Her eye grew wide and her face turned pale.
"Sadie! Welcome to Boston," Aunt Cynthia said.
"Hi, Sadie!" I replied.
"Oh, hey. Nice sign, I guess," she muttered.
"My little niece is all grown up now! You rode a plane all by yourself!" Aunt Cynthia exclaimed.
"Can we just go home already?" Sadie responded.
"Yeah, sure. Here, let me help you with your suitcases," Kyle said.
We all went outside to the parking lot. The sun was shining even brighter from the time we left home. Kyle and Sadie were trying to get the suitcases in the back of the trunk while the rest of us were already inside. We started sweating uncontrollably without the AC on. Then, they both got in the car and Kyle turned on the engine. He turned on the fan and I felt the nice cool breeze fill up the car. He started to pull out and we were on the road.
"So, Sadie, how was your old college?" Hazel asked.
"Oh, amazing! The people there were so nice. The food was awesome. But, the professors were kinda whacked. There was this one professor I had who always acted like a pirate. No seriously, this guy always had a fake parrot on his shoulder and he would sometimes talk in a pirate accent," she explained.
"Was that his actual accent?" I asked.
"Oh, no. He has an American accent. He spoke with his real voice for the first day and spoke with a pirate accent every day after that."
"What class did he teach?" Hazel asked.
"Calculus. It was required for my major."
"Sadie, you don't have to worry about the stress from your old school anymore. This is your new life. At least enjoy it," Aunt Cynthia replied.
"I wasn't stressed out," she replied.
"I told you to not to worry about it! Now, here in Boston, its a lot different from Texas," Aunt Cynthia explained.
"I figured."
"Driving a car here can be a bit difficult, so I would take the bus if I were you. Kyle has lived here the longest, so he's used to driving here, isn't that right, Kyle?"
"Actually, the only reason why I drive a car is that I don't trust public transportation like subways and taxis. I can't stand small spaces and I panic when I'm cramped in a full subway with strangers. I feel more comfortable when I have my own personal space. That's why driving a car is better for me," he explained.
"Yeah, well, I don't want to deal with traffic worrying about taking care of a car," Sadie replied.
"Well, Ruby knows a lot about subways and she can help you everything you need to know. Right, Ruby?" Hazel smirked at me.
"I don't know everything. What do you think I am, a map? I can't tell you which subway to take on which exact time, " I replied.
"You don't have to be so salty about it," Sadie said.
"Maybe I had to."
"Hey, guys, guess what? We're home!" Kyle exclaimed.
"Wait, how did we get here so fast?" Hazel asked.
"A Shortcut."
"Huh, this is a pretty nice neighborhood," Sadie said.
"Trust me. You should see the backyard during the winter," I replied.
We all got out of the car and we helped Sadie get all of her suitcases inside the house. We had to get everything upstairs to the empty room across the hall. Aunt Cynthia bought her new bedsheets, blankets, and pillows for her bed. We helped her store her clothes and her textbooks in a safe place. We had to dust all of the drawers and clean the windows. Eventually, Sadie had the information about the university she was accepted. We found the address and we all came together to figure out subway routes and other data she can get there on time.
I felt satisfied that both of my siblings live in the same house as me. I don't have much memory about the times we all were together as a family, including our parents. Kyle ended up leaving when I was just starting kindergarten. All of my final memories before he left came rushing into my system. I finally felt like I had everything I lost years ago back. I just couldn't wait for the day we reunite with Dad again.
