"Is that really them?" she asked.
"I'm pretty sure it's them. I mean, who else could they be?" I replied.
"They're hugging. How can it be them?" she asked.
"Hazel, they didn't always fight. There was a time when they got along," I said.
"Well, they do look happy. They got along better as puppies as now as grown adults. Man, what happened over the years?" she replied.
"I don't know, Hazel. I just don't know," I replied.
"Come on, we gotta wash her laundry," she said.
I grabbed the laundry basket and I went down to the garage. There were an old washing machine and dryer sitting my the corner. There was also some detergent and fabric softener right next to the washing machine. I shoved her clothes into the washing machine and started adding the detergent and softener. I turned it on and let the cycle run. While the clothes were washing, Hazel and I decided to clean the entire house. We mopped and waxed the floors, cleaned the countertops, fed Gerry, and washed the dishes.
I ran back to the laundry room to take out the clothes to put them in the dryer. I got bored and tired real fast since all we're doing for a few hours is some chores. I didn't really want to do this. Instead, I wanted to be entertained. So, I decided to go to the living room where the only TV was. The TV looked very old. It was small, wide and had a few knobs in each end. I started turning one of them.
"What are you doing?" Hazel asked.
"I'm writing a novel. What do think I'm doing?" I sarcastically replied.
"Why?" she asked.
"Why what?" I responded.
"Why are you messing with her TV?" she questioned.
"I'm bored," I replied.
"You wanted to help Grandma Ruffman with her house. This is what you get," she snapped.
"Well, I'm sorry, Hazel. Geez," I replied.
"Come on, we still have to get her groceries," she said.
"Fine," I sighed.
I grabbed the list and the money Grandma gave me earlier and we went to the grocery store. She wanted us to get some milk, eggs, butter, olive oil, soap, toothpaste, etc. We got a cart and quickly grabbed all of the necessities. We went to the cashier to pay for everything and we left with a mountain of grocery bags; I had to carry everything. After a stressful walk back to her home, we put everything away and continued to clean up.
A few hours later, it was thirty minutes past nine. We haven't gotten any sign of Grandma coming home. I wanted to surprise her with a clean home when she came back. I had trouble staying still.
"Where is she?" I asked.
"Maybe she's just running late. You know, it happens to everyone. She'll come back, eventually," Hazel responded.
"Maybe something happened," I gasped.
"Ruby, she's fine. Don't worry so much about it. I'm pretty sure there were just a lot of people in the clinic."
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"Yep. Now, come on, we gotta go back home before Kyle goes bonkers. Do you have the key?"
"Yeah, it's in my pocket."
I turned off all the light and we went out the door. I locked it from the outside and place the key under the potted plant, just like what Grandma Ruffman said to do. We headed straight to the nearest subway station and took the first subway that leads us closer to the usual path we took to get home. It was around an hour later when we finally got home...
The very next morning, we got up around nine o'clock. It was a Saturday so I didn't have to worry about going to school. Hazel and I quickly made our way back to Grandma's house to check up on her. It took us another hour to get there. The weather was very warm and sunny. It was in the middle of spring and summer was going to start next month. There weren't many days left for summer vacation to finally start.
As soon as we got there, I noticed something very off. The potted plant was still in the exact same position that it was the night we left. In fact, nothing really changed. I knew something wasn't right.
"Grandma Ruffman, are you in there?" I banged on her door. There was no reply.
"Maybe she's sleeping. Is the key still under the plant?" Hazel asked.
"Yeah, it is." I went to get the key to let ourselves in. Then, I unlocked the door for us and we were inside her home. "Grandma? Are you okay?" We checked for her everywhere, but nothing was moved since we house-sat.
"She's gone," I gasped.
"Call Ruff. Maybe he has seen her," Hazel said.
"Yeah, good idea." I picked up the landline phone from her home and started dialing Ruff's number. It took him a few seconds to respond.
"Hey, Grandma," he answered.
"Ruff, this is Ruby. I'm calling from her home. I've been meaning to ask you if you've heard anything from Grandma recently."
"No, I haven't. What's going on over there?"
"Well, Hazel and I are over here at her home and she still hasn't come back from her doctor's appointment. She didn't leave a note of anything that says where she is. There isn't one thing that isn't out of place since we went home last night. "
"Okay, don't panic. I gotta go now. Please look for her," he said in a frantic voice. The call ended.
"Great, now he's freaking out and we still have no clues," I said.
"Look, Ruby, there has to be a logical explanation on where she is. She couldn't have just disappeared," Hazel explained.
"But we gotta figure out what happened to her," I replied.
