(Y/n)'s POV
I pounded relentlessly on the heavy wooden door between me and Meg. It swung open and an annoyed looking Meg, who most likely assumed I was some crazy neighbor or postman. She paused and looked at me for a moment.
"So, I'm breaking up with Adam, but not because he screwed me over, he didn't, and when you said that it actually really hurt my feelings. So I'm sorry for hanging up and getting mad, just please don't get mad or I'll literally start crying." Meg stood there for a second, wide-eyed and slightly confused.
"Uh...what?"
"I hung up on you earlier?"
"Oh that?"
"Yes."
"Oh."
"So?"
"So what?"
"You're making this really difficult right now."
"Oh, well, I'm sorry. I guess I really wasn't in the position to say that, you're not stupid."
"So we're good now? I forgive you."
"Yeah."
We both stood there for a second. I cleared my throat and looked around her hallway for a second.
"So, I came prepared for awkwardness and I feel like that's right now. I, uh, brought you juice," I stumbled, handing her a bottle of her favorite juice. She took it from my out stretched hand, and looked at it.
"How do you know this is my favorite brand of apple juice?"
"I just do," I said and she pursed her lips.
"You're a weirdo you know that?"
"Yeah."
"Cool. Wanna come inside and talk about Adam?"
"Please?"
"Come on."
After a long while of talking and talking, I decided I would do it this evening, no distractions of any sort, just come forward and say it.
"Now what are you going to say again?"
"Adam, I feel that even if we spend more time together, we really aren't the best match and I don't want to waste you're time. I want to break up, I hope you understand," I rehearsed and Meg smiled.
"That a girl, now go get em'"
"Thanks dad?"
"You bet." I let out a laugh and headed down the stairs to get back to my flat before Adam's shift ended. When I walked up the stairs I could already hear him upstairs and I mentally cursed at not being able to gather myself for a moment. I was already starting to sweat and shake. I fumbled with my keys to open the door and when I walked in Adam glanced up from placing a book back on the shelf.
"Hey I heard you coming up the stairs? You want to get some dinner?" he asked.
"Uh, no, I actually just wanted to talk to you," I said. He looked back over at me from the bookshelf and furrowed his eyebrows.
"You alright?" He asked.
"Yeah, I just need to talk." He approached me and waited for me to talk. What was I supposed to say again? "Adam, I feel like even if we spend more time together...we just aren't suited for each other, and I don't want to waste your time. I want to break up and I hope you understand."
He looked at me, his face still, frozen in shock. Man, I can't believe I actually got that out. He approached me, taking my hand.
"I get it, but you don't have to lie to me, I know it's that guy."
"What?"
"When I apologized with all those roses? It's him isn't it?" he asked, forcing me to look at him. Who was he--
"Oh no, no, defini--"
"(y/n), the few times I even met him I could see it. You guys were friends as kids and I guess whatever you felt for him stuck around and I get it."
"That's really not it," I said.
"Then what is it?"
"We're clearly incompatible, why don't you date that Melissa, you two both like science and you'd be cute," I said.
"So it's her then."
"No! How the hell did you get that from what I said?"
"You're jealous?"
"NO! Would you quit it? Can't you realize that it's US that's the problem? Not anyone else, Adam," I said. He seemed slightly taken aback. "Look, you're a nice guy, but we really don't fit together, and that's the bottom line. No Dan. No Melissa. Just us."
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"Yes. I understand. I'll just gather up my things and I'll see you around," he said.
"Please don't get upset," I said, watching his eyes water. Now I felt guilty for my dry ones.
"No, it's fine," he said, disappearing into my room to get a few things he kept here. I sighed and collapsed on the couch, rubbing my eyes. In a few short minutes he was gone and I didn't know what to make of it. I called up Meg, just the tone of my voice causing her to invite herself over. I poured glasses of wine, something I didn't do very often, but now just seemed like the right time.
~Time skip~
"So he just kept searching for excuses?" Meg asked, sipping the wine I gave her and I nodded.
"Exactly. It was just him accusing me of having feeling for Dan or being jealous of some girl at his office so he wouldn't have to face the fact we suck."
"Man, I'm sorry that sucks."
"The worst thing was he was about to cry and I didn't even feel sad," I said, pouring more wine in my glass and then hers. "I feel like a jerk."
"You just weren't as attached as he was, that's something you can't really help," she said and I nodded. My phone dinged and I reached over to grab it. There was a text from Phil, a tad blurry from the fact I was slightly tipsy, but not enough that would label me as drunk.
Hey, if you're not busy, would you like to come hang around with us?
After work? I get out at like 2.
Perfect.
"Who's that?"
"Phil," I replied.
"Snacc number 1," she said and I rolled my eyes.
"And who's snacc number 2?"
"Dan obviously, it's like Dr. Suess, don't think that's a rating system I'm not horrible."
"Oh, but you are."
"Hey! It's not my fault you used to be best friends with snaccs," she said, sipping her wine.
"Actually stop."
"Mmm nah."
"You're awful."
"Fight me."
"I will."
