“You know the couch hurt my back.”
“Okay then. Stop getting all up on me.”
He sucked his teeth and turned the other way, where his back was facing me.
“Thank you.” I finally drifted off to sleep.
At about six Sata woke up crying. I looked over at August who was dead to the world with his left leg hanging off the bed and mouth open. Talking about he couldn’t get comfortable. He was looking for an excuse to cuddle up next to me.
I threw on some pants, closed the bedroom door and went to feed Sata.
“Goodmorning Munch!” I picked her up and kissed her. She stopped crying and smiled.
I smelled her to see if she needed a diaper changed. She didn’t. I took her to the kitchen, made her bottle, then went to the living room and fed her.
She refused to go back to sleep, so I just played with her and read to her.
At about 8 the doorbell rang. I went to get it.
“Hey Sevyn.” I said straightening my hair that was still a mess from yesterday. “If I would’ve known you was coming by I would’ve gotten ready.”
“Oh no, I just wanted to drop this by.” It was an edible arrangements chocolate dipped fruit bouquet.
“Oh wow. Thank you. Can you hold her a sec, while I put it up?” I gave her Sata and took the fruit.
“You can go sit in the living room.” Sevyn went to go sit in the living room and I went to put the fruit in the fridge.
“Since you’re here. I might as well give you this.” I walked into the living room, giving her her a card I had been intending to give her and took Sata and sat next to her.
“Oh wow, Thank you Mrs. Parker.” She hugged me.
“No I really appreciate all you’ve done. Helping me with the funeral. Just getting stuff straight at the office everything. And I talked to Senator York and he said if you want the internship you can have it. Seeing as you know.”
“Wow, I can’t thank you enough. I wish we could still work together in some capacity.”
“Well you know. Change in leadership, everybody has to go. But when you run, make sure you give me a call. I might need a job ain’t that right Munch?”
“I will.” She smiled.
“There’s something in that card so, don’t throw it away.”
“Oh I won’t.” She laughed. “Uh Mrs. Parker I need to talk to you about something.”
“Sure, what’s up?” I turned to her smiling.
“You know I look up to you more than a boss. You’re not only my mentor, but you’re my friend.”
“Of course.”
“Which is why I have to be honest with you.”
“Okay about what?” Assata was on my lap clapping her hands.
“Me and August went out yesterday.”
“Oh, okay.” That explains why he stood me up.
“He told me yesterday that you guys used to date.”
I coughed embarrassed. “Yeah, long before I even started dating Nate.”
“His senior year right?”
“Yeah…” I asked more of a question than saying a statement. I was confused as to where this was going.
“He was dating me around the same time too.”
