AUGUST P.O.V. -
“Why you sitting out here?” My mother came and sat next to me on the curb.
I put out the blunt I was smoking.
“Sorry bout that. Ain’t want you to see that.”
“Amber know you do that?” She looked at me like boy you know better.
“I don’t do it round her. Just when I need to relax. Calm me down.”
“What happened to your face?” She asked shocked, moving my jaw toward her to get a clearer view. I had a small bruise under my eye and my lip was a bit swollen.
“Me and Amb brother got into it.”
“About what?”
“He brining up old stuff. Coming at me crazy. I said some slick stuff back and he punched me. I wasn’t gonna let the nigga just hit me.”
“When you say old stuff, you mean what happened with you and Amb?”
I shook my head yes and picked up a small branch off the ground that was lying in front of me.
“I take it he didn’t know y’all were back together?”
“Guess not.” I drew letters with the branch on the pavement.
“So he was defending his sister like you were defending your brother?”
“You saying he should’ve hit me?” I looked at my mother.
“No. But I’m saying if he didn’t know y’all was back together and all he know is the past, he was just defending his sister. It’s not okay, but I get why he did it. If some man did what you did to Amb to Netia you mean to tell me you wouldn’t do nothing?”
I rolled my eyes. “I don’t care what I did, the nigga had no right to hit me.”
“And you right. But you can’t say he didn’t have a right to be angry, that’s his sister. He was just looking out for her.”
I waved my hand. “Man, whatever. That’s not even what pissed me off. I’m pissed off because Amb didn’t defend me.”
“And you would defend Amb?”
“Hell yeah. When Smoke came at her wrong, I was willing to whoop his ass.”
“Until you found out about Mel?”
“Who side you on Mama?”
“All I’m saying is give Amber a break.”
“Tsk.” I spat.
“ Choosing between your man and your brother is a hard. And just cause she didn’t say anything, don’t mean she didn’t choose you.”
“If she was silent, that meant she chose him.”
“Was Sata around when all this was happening?”
“Yeah Amb was holding her.”
“So you want her to put the baby in harm’s way to come to your rescue?”
“Of course not. I’m just saying she could’ve said something. Like when his dumbass called me Sata’s sperm donor instead of her father. I had a fuckin’ sperm donor, and I ain’t nowhere near that shit. From the moment I found out Sata was mine, I stepped up to the plate and did shit father’s do. I ain’t left my daughter side since I met her. That’s more than my daddy ever did for me. And that nigga knew where I was at. I bought Sata more stuff in the short time I met her, than my daddy ever bought me. So for Amb not to defend me, when she know that, it cut deep.”
