{loving you was sunshine, safe and sound. A steady place to let down my defences}

"How you doing kid?" Melinda Thompson asked her granddaughter gently. Hazel was sat on the couch staring into nothing.

"Yeah" She croaked "I'm all good Grams."

"Hazel" her grandmother started but was cut off.

"No I lied I'm not okay. At all. But what else can I do? I'm done with crying, I'm done with being angry. I just don't know what to do now."

"Hell sweetheart, even I can't give you a good answer for that." Melinda sighed taking a big gulp of the whisky she poured, then scrunched her face up as it burned her throat "is there anything you wanna do?"

Hazel opened her mouth but before she could speak, her phone went off. She got up and got it out of her bag to see who had messaged her.

Unknown number
Hey it's Jasper, Alice gave me your number. Did you get home okay?

"Grams" Hazel said "when were you going to tell me the Cullen's are vampires?"

Melinda sighed and placed the glass back on the table, reached for her carton of cigarettes a lit one up.

"Well for starters" she began and inhaled the smoke "it wasn't my place to tell you. That's their secret not mine. However" she pointed the cigarette at Hazel "I did ask them not to tell you, but I guess they ignored that request."

"Why?" Hazel asked genuinely confused at her grandmothers decision.

"Because I believed you couldn't handle it" her grandmother shrugged "and that's not to say you're not tough or I was going against you. Hazel in the past month alone, you have been some quite traumatic stuff. Your mind is still processing everything, I didn't want to overload you with anymore when I didn't feel it was necessary. I was going to tell you, but when I felt you were ready."

Hazel went quiet for a moment. A part of her wanted to be so angry at her grandmother for making that decision when she was the only person so far not lying to her. However, she understood her point of view. She stood up and walked over to her grandmother, who placed the cigarette into the ash tray next to the whiskey glass. Hazel leaned forward and hugged her tightly.

"No more secrets?" She asked, her voice cracking as she blinked away yet more tears. Her grandmother stroked her hair gently.

"No more secrets" she agreed "you okay?"

"No. But I will be. I come from a line of tough women."

"Atta girl." Melinda smiled "I'm sorry this happened. But I'm not sorry for kicking your mom out. She's my daughter and I love her, but god she can be a total bitch."

Hazel laughed loudly, nodding slightly in agreement "what happened to her Grams? Why doesn't she have powers same as us?"

"She did" Melinda said pouring another whiskey "she gave them up."
