"I need your help, Professor," you heard Remus say. You weren't supposed to be out this late, but neither was Remus. Why had he visited Slughorn this late? Unless there was an emergency, he shouldn't be out. You pressed your ear harder to the door, trying to listen more.
"What for, my boy?" Slughorn asked. You could hear the tiredness in his voice, it sounded like Remus had woken him up. What was so important to awake a professor? "The pain's getting too bad, I can't sleep anymore." You remembered the bags under Remus' eyes, but he had said it was from excessive studying. Studying didn't cause this much pain, did it?
"Mr. Lupin, I apologize but I'm all out of my pain relievers. Perhaps you could eat more chocolate?" Slughorn suggested. "I ran out three days ago," Remus replied, "and Professor Sprout's plants aren't doing enough for me either." You could almost hear Slughorn thinking of a plan.
"Could you try asking Miss Y/L/N for help? She's quite gifted with potions and she may have a pain reliever in her own private stash or she might be so kind to whip up a batch for you." "But I don't want to tell her about the- about my- condition," he added quietly. You paused, wondering what Remus was so scared of. He was one of the tops in the year, a brilliant friend, and a great person. Who wouldn't stick by him if he had an odd rash or something?
"I see," Slughorn said. He paused, then continued, "what if you didn't tell her exactly why you needed the potion?" he advised. "I know you're not one for lying, but what if you simply told her you have a bone condition? It explains why your body hurts and... say it's a chronic issue you've dealt with for sixteen years!" Slughorn added, "It would explain why you hurt every month." You paused, holding in your breath. Every month, Remus felt bad pain that hurt him so bad he had to awaken a professor to help him.
You held your breath, suddenly aware of how loud your breathing was. What if they heard you and Remus didn't want you to tell anyone his secret so he attacked you? Is it possible for a werewolf to do that to you when it wasn't the full moon yet? Without looking, you turned and sprinted off. How could Dumbledore let a werewolf into the school? He was endangering everyone for the sake of one student. Was it truly worth it? Did he even know?
Your feet pounded against the cold stone of the floor. You glanced back to see if Remus was following you, but you didn't hear any howls. Well, would he howl? You kept going- right into the staircase banister, which promptly knocked you out.

Your eyes slowly adjusted to the light, it was hard to see at first. You were in a bed but it wasn't your bed, there was white everywhere. You rolled over trying to conceal your eyes, but you saw someone in a chair, looking at you. It was the person you didn't want near you ever again. Remus smiled at you. "Feeling alright?" he asked, kind as always - although there was something different in him, you could tell. With a glance at his eyes, you saw the bags had deepened, making him look like a different person. You nodded slowly. "What happened?" you asked. "All I remember is running and then my head really hurt and now I'm here." Remus shifted in his seat.
"I, um, had to ask Professor Slughorn a question about an extra credit assignment he gave me and on the way back to the common room I saw you passed out," he explained. One thing you had noticed about Remus was that he wasn't a good liar. Whenever he lied, his eyes would dart everywhere and anywhere. He would stutter in the beginning but then find his way through the lie. You looked at Remus.
"Please don't lie to me. Are we the only ones here?" you asked. He nodded. "Remus, I know what you are." His eyes flared up and his body started shaking. "What do you know." It wasn't a question, it was a demand.
"You're a werewolf," you whispered quietly. You saw Remus' face slowly melt and he started crying. "Please, please don't tell anyone Y/N," he said. "I can't leave Hogwarts." At first, you were going to tell Remus his secret was safe with you but he had to stay away from you. But now, there was no way you could.
You remembered all the times he had been there for his friends, when he was the only one who could console Sirius after a bad letter from home, when James lost a Quidditch match and he would stay up with him to make sure he was okay, and all the times he helped Peter study late into the night. No monster would do that.
You smiled. "Why would I tell anyone?" you asked. "You're Remus Lupin, a prefect and an amazing friend. It's just another secret for us." He smiled gratefully at you. Remus got up and hugged you.
"Thank you," he said. "Do the Marauders know about it?" you asked. "Yea," Remus said, "and they're totally fine with it!" He smiled and laughed at the memory. "When James found out, he told me no monster would fold his socks with such precision like I do, and Sirius said that I would always be the same person to him, and Peter promised me they would find a way to help me." He paused, smiling. "They're really the best friends I could ever ask for." You nodded.
"I can help you too," you offered, "by giving you a potion to help the pain every month. I'm not sure how well it will work, but it should help."
"How did I ever end up with such great friends?" he muttered, laughing. You laughed too. "Because you're a great person, Remus. We all love you." He smiled at you and you saw how his eyes caught the sun's glare. Your stomach felt odd but you focused on helping Remus.
"Once I get out of here I'll do some research on how to help you with the pain more," I said. "Aconite is really the only thing that helps," he said. "I don't think I've ever heard of that before," you said. "It's also known as monkshood or wolfsbane, and it works really well in tea," Remus told you. You smiled. "Thanks. I'll see if I can look up some other ingredients that might help you," you said. Remus smiled. "Thank you."
He got off up his chair and almost fell. "Remus, are you alright?" you asked. Why couldn't he even get off his chair? "I'm fine, don't worry, it's that I haven't slept in a few days so I'm not feeling very well and the moon's getting closer and it feels worse around then," he explained. "It won't get much better until after the moon." "Well that just sucks," you stated. Remus laughed. "Yes, it just sucks." You laughed too. "Here, take my bed, I'm going to the library to read about werewolves and whatever I can find to make it better for you. You need to sleep, Remus." He sighed and seeing no way to stop you, he climbed onto the bed. You slid off the other side.
"Thank you Y/N," he said again. "Remus, go to bed," you ordered, "I have to go check out the entire werewolf section in the library." He laughed. "Oh, and one thing. The Marauders and I came up with a name for my affliction." "Affliction?" you asked. "Ok, what is it?" "My furry little problem," he said with a smile.
You laughed. "Just go to bed and sleep for once, alright?" Remus nodded. "Now go so I can sleep." You both laughed and you started going down to the library.
Remus didn't deserve all the hate werewolves got. He was pure, sixteen, and never tried to hurt anyone before. The Marauders were still with him and now you were too. Remus would never be alone, you promised yourself that if they ever left, you would always be there for him.
