The Maze Runner Fanfic [Newt x Reader]

You wake up on the floor with a horrible headache. You don't remember much from last night. It's probably because of Gally's juice. You notice that everyone sleeps on the floor except Newt, Alby, Frypan, Gally and some boys you don't know. At least Thomas is next to you. Then a few boys start to wake up. You watch them getting ready. They seem strong, I think they are the ones who are allowed into the maze. And you are right. The boys split up, each one running to a different gate. 

"Morning, beautiful." It was Thomas. "Since when are you awake?"

"10 minutes, I guess. Who are those boys?"

"They're Runners, the only ones who have the courage and strength to enter the maze. Why, you like them?"

"No, I'm just curious."

You wait for everyone to wake up so you can go eat your breakfast. You sit at a picnic table with Thomas, Alby and Newt. Basically all of your friends. Alby starts talking to you, a very strange thing since he doesn't talk very much.

"So today you start working, (y/n). Do you have any preferences?"

"Can I have more jobs?"

"Sure."

"I think I will be a Cook and a Track-hoe."

While working, you get distracted by Newt. He's not looking at you, so you can peek for a while. His strong arms are tying some tomatoes. He seems very focused on what he's doing. After he finished, he took a step back to admire his work. He's proud of it. Suddenly, he turns to you and catches you peeking.

"Really? Again?" he says with a smile on his face. That smile warmed your heart. "(y/n), I'm talking to you."

"Yeah, sorry. I was just... thinking about... something." you say while feeling how you blush.

"Aww, you're cute when you blush."

Your heart is about to explode. You don't know what to do and you feel so embarrassed.

"I'll go get some water." you say while rushing into the Deadheads.

When you arrive in the woods, you make sure no one can see you so you sit next to a tree. What was I thinking? Who knows what will he think about me? I really need to be more careful when I'm watching him.

You hear a branch crack. "Hello?" nothing. "Is anyone there?" silence. "This isn't funny." your heart starts to beat very fast. For the first time since you got out of the box, you are genuinely scared. Another branch cracks. Then someone jumps on you. You don't see who he is, but he doesn't seem very friendly. You manage to get him off you. And then you saw it. You saw the madness in his eyes, the anger. But there was one more thing. He seems ready to kill. He takes something out of his pocket. A knife. You start running, but he's faster than you. Maybe if you started screaming, someone would hear you. 

"HELP! Newt, help! Alby!"

Newt hears you and comes as fast as he can. Thomas sees him and tells Alby to come. You see Newt and jump into his hands. Right before he catches you, that boy throws his knife. It hits you right in the leg. An excruciating pain penetrates your body. You start screaming with all your might. Alby and Thomas catch that boy, each one by one hand. 

"You don't understand, she's one of them! I saw her!" 

He somehow escapes and jumps over you, but Gally comes and hits him in the head with a shovel.

Blood comes out of the stab. The knife came out on the other side. The pain was so bad that you could barely breathe. Right before you passed out, you hear Newt screaming for the Medjacks.

The next thing you know is that you are tied up in a bed. A boy was looking at you.

"I'm gonna be honest, this is the worst pain you ever felt."

Without waiting for your response, he starts pulling the knife out. You start screaming until your lungs hurt you. You feel something in your hand. Newt's hand. He is there with you. The pain passed for a bit. Then you hear that boy speak again.

"I'm really sorry for what I'll do next, but it's the only way."

Then you feel like you're burning. The smell of burned flash makes you want to throw up. Until you realize it's your flash. Then you pass out again.

While everyone left, Newt stayed with you. He started cleaning your hands looking for other scratches. He notices something weird. Your veins are black. He looks at the bandage. It has black blood on it.

"What in the bloody hell?" he whispers careful to not wake you up.

After 2 hours, you finally wake up.

"Newt, are you still here?"

"Of course. Relax, Ben is in the Slammer now. That slinthead won't touch you ever again."

"You heard what he said. Why are you still here?"

"He went through the Changing. That's what happens to most of them. They become irascible and dangerous. You can't trust anything they say. Also, I don't think you could ever do something bad. Or, at least, not this bad."

"What if the others believe him?"

"If they believe him, they'll have to deal with me."

That was the moment you realized you really like Newt.

"Do you think you can walk?" he asked.

"Yes, why?"

"We want you to participate Ben's banishing. He'll be kicked out of the Glade."

When you arrive at one of the gates, you see all the boys standing there. They are all looking at you. Great, as if a stab wasn't enough, now everyone is staring at me. What if they heard Ben? What if they believe him? You let your head down and try to not look at anyone.

Alby comes with Ben. He's crying.

Thomas appears from behind you.

"This is not going to be a nice view."

You want to ask him what will happen, but you already know the answer. Seeing Ben crying broke your heart. He's terrified. When they try to push him in the maze, you turn to Thomas.

"I can't do this. I'm sorry." and you run to the Deadheads. Is the maze that bad? If it is, how could they do this to him, he already went through so much pain. And it wasn't his fault, he didn't know what he's doing or saying. If I could only do something to prevent this. But it was too late. You hear the gates closed and you know he has no chance now. Somehow, you feel like it was your fault. Why did I have to run there? I could've just keep working.
