The Maze Runner Fanfic [Newt x Reader]

Chapter 5 - A new Runner

"I quit, I quit!"

You release him and help him stand up. You won the fight. You're a Runner. You're so happy that you can't hear the noise everyone makes. Newt comes to you.

"You fought pretty well there. I'm impressed. Let's get you cleaned."

You follow him to the Med-jacks' room. He gets a wet towel and starts cleaning your face very careful.

"That's weird." he says.

"What?"

"Your blood. It's black."

"That's not possible."

"No, look." Newt hands you the towel. "Your veins are also black so I don't think it's because this blood is dried."

You don't know what to say. You are shocked. 

"Maybe the Creators will give us some answers when we find an exit." you say.

"If we find an exit."

Minho takes you to the Map Room.

"This is where we kept our maps for each sections since the beginning. Our section is number 8. Down here we have our weapons. Pick a small knife and what else you like. You must have at least one knife, you never know. Here, take some running boots. They sent these the day you came, I think it's your size. And some clothes. You can't run in jeans. Also, I'm not quite sure what this is." he says, while pulling a sports bra out.

"It doesn't matter." you say fast and take it from him.

"Anyway, tomorrow you are going to come with me in the maze. Follow me and try to keep up, we're going to run the whole day."

The next day, you and Minho eat your breakfast before the gates open. Newt comes to you and says to Minho:

"If anything bad happens to her, I will personally rip your bloody head off, I don't care if it was your fault or not." and then turns to you. "Take care of yourself, I don't trust this jacked shank."

"What did I even do to you?" says Minho with a fake annoyance expression.

Newt glares at him and now Minho looks genuinely scared.

"Fine, I promise I will take care of her. Trust me, I don't want (y/n) to get hurt either, but she looks like she should protect me."

You and Minho run into the maze. It's much bigger once you're inside it. You run for 3 hours without taking any break when Minho suddenly stops, spreading his arm so you stop too. He accidentally touches your chest.

"I'm sorry." he says trying not to make eye contact. "See that?" he whispers pointing to a creature. "That's a Griever."

You've never seen anything uglier in your life. This is clearly not something natural. But how could people create this and put it together with some kids? 

"Ok, so what do we do now?" you whisper to Minho.

"Go slowly in the other direction. If it comes after us, we run and get out of the maze. They never come in the Glade."

You start walking back, trying not to make any sound. Your heart was beating like crazy. Then the griever turns his head to you. He saw you. Both of you.

"RUN!"

You don't wait for further commands. Luckily, you remember the way back to the Glade. When you get out of the maze, you and Minho lay down. You've never been so tired before. All your muscles hurt you. You sit a minute in the silence, then you both start laughing. You don't even know why. Newt comes. He looks worried.

"Why are you back already? Did anything happen? (Y/n), are you hurt?"

"I'm ok, I appreciate the concern. You seem to care a lot about me." Minho was being sarcastic.

Newt rolls his eyes.

"I was joking, calm down. We are both ok, we're just tired. A griever followed us. Aaand I shouldn't have said that."

"A griever followed you? You're sure you're not stung?"

"I think I'd feel if I was stung."

"I told you it was a mistake. It's her first day and she almost got attacked by a griever."

"Almost." now it's your turn to talk. "I knew the risks when I decided to be a Runner. And I can't pretend I didn't enjoy it. The adrenaline flowing through my veins. I've never felt more alive." you notice the concern on Newt's face. "I'll be careful, Newt. I promise."
