Chapter 37: Resisting Our Urges
Falcon POV:
I've never bought into the whole "she walked in and the world stopped" crap. It's a girl big deal, get over it, take a picture. The whole romantic bullshit was lost on me so when she walked in my world didn't stop, it sped up.
There was this gorgeous girl, all soft silk and curves and she walked in through the very door I was contemplating leaving through. Everything about her shouted for my attention but not in the way I was used to, she had an understated elegance about her.
Or at least that's what I thought until she faceplanted.
Blaire POV:
The room was stiffling and i could feel the prick of eyes on me. Warranting a quick glance around I spotted the culprit, a tall shadowy man.
He sat perched in the corner, the light of the fireplace casting a golden glow on his masked face.
There was no denying he was gorgeous. What I can say it in my head!
Angles and plains, messy hair and a fitted suit. It was my type to a tee. But I couldn't make any move, I promised the girls a try not a miracle.
Wary now I stalked across the room to plant myself at the refreshments table at least there I could pretend to have fun.
I was hafways there when my heel caught in my skirts and I fell head first toward the floor. One second I was up and walking the next I was groggily rolling over to stare at the pulsing ceiling.
"Are you okay?" Someone asks pulling me to my feet. I stumble but they steady me. "That was quite a spill."
"I hate wearing dresses." I grumbled absently.
"Well I can always get you out of it."
I reeled back and stared up at my rescuer. Bloody hell it was tall dark and handsome from the fireplace. Plot twist.
He grimaced apologetic, "Sorry force of habit, you have to understand guys are wired with these reflexes. I couldn't resist."
"I didn't know guys had instincts, here I thought they were all stupidity and cave man logic." I snarked, immediately regretting it... me and my big sarcastic mouth.
The masked man looked shocked for a split second before proceeding to laugh himself sick.
"Well I can't say you're wrong, when guys are faced with beautiful ladies they usually want to throw them over the shoulder and leave." He smiled at me crookedly and winked, "some of us are good at resisting, you're still here aren't you?"
I could feel a blush enter my cheeks and he smirked at me, "You' d better keep resisting."
"I make no promises."
Nicole's POV:
"Who is that Blaire's dancing with?" Addy asked calling my attention to the two twined bodies on the dance floor.
"No clue, looks hot enough though. Maybe she's finally taking our advice."
" I still say she and-" Cane started.
"Say you think they'd be good together one more time and I'll feed you your balls." I scowled.
"I'm just saying Falcon's a known threat. We know him. What do we know about dark horse over there? Bubkis."
"Just look at them." Addy sighed watching the twirling couple.
"I am it's making me barf."
"Well we deal with you so."
"I've never seen her so... free."
"I have."
"He doesn't count!"
"They look like the perfect couple."
They did indeed look perfect.
Blaire's POV:
Hours passed like minutes as he danced me around the room. We laughed and joked and talked so much that my throat hurt from exertion.
If you were to ask me later what it was we talked about I couldn't explain it if I tried. All I could tell you was that as the night got colder we pressed closer until I was ducked right under his chin.
"Its getting a bit loud in here, you want to step out." He called above the music.
"That'd be perfect." I smiled.
He grinned and spun me in a wide arc, right through the back door. When I came to a stop on the porch he grinned and grabbed my hand.
"The swing's over here."
I followed him and sat on the old tree swing. It reminded me of one I had at home a life time ago. It was probably in the attic now put away, forgotten.
"I don't know much about you. Who's to say you won't kill me and stash the body out here." I joked as he pushed me in the swing.
"And leave you in that dress for all eternity. I'm not that cruel, you'll probably trip on your way into the after life." He chuckled pushing me higher.
"You make me sound like a complete ditz."
"How many times did you step on my toes?" He asked punctuating with a tickle. "How many near misses did you have just getting here?" I squealed and batted at him. "Hell how did we meet?"
"Fine fine I give!" I said breathlessly. "I never said I was Scarlett Johansson, I'm just no Dopey."
"I disagree you are so Dopey a very adorable Dopey." I stuck my tongue out at him. "Dont tempt me."
"Jerk. So what's your story?"
"My story well it's long you got time?"
"For you all the time in the world."
And so we talked I told him the pressures of being an only child, the constant need to be perfect for everyone and everything. He told me about his family and how much he loved them but how he would soon be taking over the business. I've never seen someone tense up so fast.
"I mean I love them and I would obviously not hate following in their foot steps and taking over, but I feel like I never got the chance to properly decide for myself. And I haven't the foggiest why I'm telling you all this." He grumbled running a hand through his hair.
"Because I'm a great listener and you need to talk to someone and who better than someone you're likely to never see again."
"Ye-wait what do you mean never see again?"
"Well it's a party who knows what happens tomorrow." I laughed lightly.
"What if I want to see you again?"
"After tonight?"
"Yes. What if I want to see you again, after tonight ,without the masks?"
I turned to smile at him and caught the most darling expression on his face. Wistful and smug at the same time.
"I wouldn't be against the idea."
Suddenly I was pulled to my feet and I was facing him.
"Dance with me?"
"We only just stopped." I laughed.
"What time do you think it is?"
"Like midnight."
He wrapped an arm around me, "Its nearly four am."
"We've been talking for hours." I exclaimed.
"Sometimes you just need to find the right person to talk to." He winked at me and I shook my head playfully, "plus now you know all my secrets there's no letting you go."
He took me into his arms and we danced to the dying melody coming from inside just as the sun peaked out from under the darkness.
"I think I'm going to stop resisting now." He murmured lowering his lips to mine.
"I think I stopped a while ago."
"Finally."
And then his lips were on mine and the world behind my eyelids exploded.
Falcons POV:
I stood there kissing the most gorgeous girl I ever knew and in that moment I understood why guys gave it all up.
Hell I just met her and I was ready to give everything up to stay by her side. Every tug on my hair, every breathy sigh only made me want it more. Now if only those pesky masks-
"These are just getting in the way." I murmured pulling at our masks.
I was inches from her lips when she sucked her breath in harshly and leapt back.
And in the place of the beauty I was ready to do anything for stood Blaire.
WHAT THE EVER LOVING F***!
"What did I just do?"
She looked shellshocked, "How could you? Did you know - this was all a game to you wasn't it?"
There was real pain in her voice and I found myself reaching for her. "No-"
"I cannot believe you!"
"Bl-"
She cut me off again. I couldn't get a word in edgewise. I saw the pain and hurt in her eyes and oddly enough felt it mirrored in me.
She was nearly in tears now, "After everything you've done to me!"
"I don't even know why you're mad at me!"
"YOU KNOW!"
"All I know us that I kissed you right now and you seemed fine with it!"
"Well I'm not fine with it now!"
"You can't change your mind like that!" I shouted grabbing her and probably doing the stupidest thing yet.
I kissed her again. Her lips were addictive and now that I'd tasted them I couldn't stop. She bloody didn't seem to mind either until she reeled back and punched me square in the jaw.
"I am not a game." She whispered running off dress billowing behind her.
I stood there staring after her until a tipsy looking Cane came barreling out.
"Whats with all the screaming matches at four am!"
He looked in the direction I was staring and saw Blaire dart through the foliage. Suddenly his expression darkened. "What did you do to her!"
"I kissed her."
"WHAT!"
"I kissed her."
And that's when he punched me in the face.
