If We Had Met First

Chapter Twenty Five

“But how did the bitch get in? Zack never invites anyone in unless we tell him to.” Damon said. He had been the last to arrive getting there after Elena, Stefan, Lexi, Sadie and even Bonnie who looked very uncomfortable sitting in one of the huge plushy armchairs. You could tell from the way he was walking and talking that he was absolutely seething.

He was of course referring to how Katherine had been able to get into the boarding house.

Stefan just shrugged his shoulders.

“He didn’t have to. I found his body out back hidden in the bushes, he was probably doing some yard work when she killed him. He was the only human living here so once he died she didn’t need an invitation.” Lexi said.

Elena had never really talked to Zack seeing as the first time she met him she had been busy making out with Damon so there was still some awkwardness between them. But every now and then she would see him around the house and he seemed nice enough. It was sad that he had to die because he stood in the way of what Katherine wanted.

“Okay, so first she shows up and tells me to leave town and snaps my neck and then she shows up here. Stefan what did you guys do? Maybe knowing more about what she did will help us be able to figure out what she’s up to.” Damon said. He was looking at Stefan with his eyebrows raised waiting for his explanation.

Stefan was staring adamantly at the carpet below his feet and didn’t say a word.

“Stefan answer me.” Damon growled.

“Fine, she came saying she was Elena and that she was looking for you. We talked, we kissed and then we spent the night in my bedroom.” Stefan replied standing up so he was face to face with his brother. “Is that what you want to hear Damon? That last night I thought I slept with the girl you used to be with?”

Snarling Damon threw Stefan across the room but before either of them could doing anything else Elena stood up and stood right in front of Damon so that she was right between them.

“Stop it, it doesn’t matter if he thought it was me when he slept with Katherine.” She turned to Damon so she was looking him right in the eyes, “it wasn’t me. I wouldn’t do that.” For a moment they just looked at each other and for that moment Elena thought that maybe he had changed his mind.

“We need to all be on our guard because it doesn’t matter what Katherine wants, she will stop at nothing to get it and that includes killing every single one of us.” Damon said looking at everyone but Elena. “The first thing we need to do is find the grimoire so we can get Anna and her mother out of the tomb, before I left I talked to Anna and she agreed to help us. Her and her mother have been alive for a long time and will be valuable allies.”

Elena shook her head, “no, there is no way that we are going to work with her. Did you forget the fact that she killed my mom, threatened to kill my brother? How can we trust her after that?” She asked.

Damon turned to look at her, his pale blue eyes were cold and gave away no emotion, “contrary to what you think Elena not everything is about you.  Anna will be working with us against Katherine and if you don’t like it then you can just go home and don’t even bother coming back.” His voice was just as cold as his eyes and the lack of emotion in it chilled her to the bone.

The three other girls were watching their exchange with their mouths open in shock while Stefan was just watching with his eyebrows raised.

Shakily Elena sat back down onto the couch and looked down at her hands as she tried to blink away the tears that were beginning to well up. She had never thought that no matter what was going on between them that Damon would talk to her like that or be able to make her feel so insignificant.
