Chapter Twenty Six
Late last night Damon had swept in only to announce that he and Elena had found the grimoire and he left it with her before once again leaving. Immediately following this news Sadie had retreated to one of the many rooms in the Salvatore Boarding House that she had been using during her stay probably to do some more meditating. When Stefan had asked her about it she just said something about clearing her mind but he couldn’t help but notice just how much time she spent ‘clearing her mind’.
So that left him alone with Lexi, normally this would have been fine or even preferable but the blonde was currently glaring at him with eyes filled with venom. Ever since Stefan had been the one to plant the ideas to split up his brother and Elena she hadn’t said a single word to him and had barely even looked at him. And now she was looking at him like she had when they first met when he was the ripper.
It would only be too easy for him to just get up and walk away, that way he wouldn’t have to face the fact that his best friend seemed to hate him. But he couldn’t bring himself to just get up and walk out. Lexi was his best friend and ever since she started ignoring him he had began to feel lonely.
His brother absolutely loathed him, Elena probably didn’t want to go anywhere near him after she heard what happened with Katherine, Lexi was mad and Sadie basically did witchy things or followed Lexi around.
“What’s with the glare Lex?” Stefan asked after he could no longer take the silence that had been stretching out.
Even though it didn’t seem possible Lexi’s glare only got more intense, “like you don’t know already Stefan. What you did to Damon and Elena makes me sick, I don’t care if you have issues with your brother but you shouldn’t let them affect other people. I thought you were better than that Stefan.”
When Stefan did nothing but hang his head in shame Lexi rolled her eyes and stalked away. Even when the sound of her heels on the hardwood floor faded away Stefan just sat there. Because she was right. There had been a brief moment after Damon ended things with Elena because of him that he felt happy, the happiness however was soon replaced by a sense of guilt that refused to disappear.
His self wallowing was interrupted by a soft knock at the door. When he opened it he was hit with a sudden wave a déjà vu because just like a couple nights ago Elena stood at the doorway. Only tonight she didn’t look as calm and she was clutching to a giant book as if it was her lifeline.
“Are you here to see my brother Elena?” Stefan asked bitterly. He had grown to hate the feeling the arose in his chest whenever he thought about her because he knew that he would never be able to act on them. If he did the guilt would eat at him for the rest of his life and that would be unbearable.
“Actually I’m here to give this to Sadie. Figured she would want to look over the spell before she actually had to cast it.” She said holding up the dusty book.
Stefan stepped aside to let Elena walk in, she started walking down the hall towards the stairs before she turned and smiled awkwardly at Stefan.
“Uh-I actually only really know where Damon’s room is, so do you think you could show me the way?” She asked.
After nodding Stefan walked her to the room Sadie was staying in and waited patiently outside the door so he could help her back down if she needed it. It wasn’t long before Elena emerged from the other girl’s room.
“Listen Stefan, I hope you know that I’m not mad about what happened with Katherine. I don’t care that you slept with her when you thought it was me.” Elena suddenly blurted out as they were walking down the stairs.
