Chapter Forty Three

The second Sadie had stepped out from her place in the trees the wind began blowing, Damon remembered when they had tried to stop her and she had made wind start blowing in their hallway. That was a gentle breeze compared to the gale that she was creating know. Black clouds completely covered the sky and the air was filled with the sounds of booming thunder, crackling lightning and the screams of Klaus.

Even though Damon wanted to watch him die, he wanted to relish in watching the monster who killed Elena lose his life he couldn’t. Elena’s body lay exactly where he had dropped it after he drained the last drop of blood from it.

It didn’t take him long to reach her and once he did everything else disappeared. If it hadn’t been for the unnatural paleness it would have only been too easy for him to convince himself that she was simply sleeping. Her eyes were closed and her lips were turned up into a small smile.

Using only two fingers he brushed a strand of her hair that had fallen into her face away. Then he carefully put his arms under her body and got gracefully to his feet.

Without looking back to where Klaus was still screaming in agony or even glancing at Sadie Damon began walking away with Elena. He had no idea if she had drank the blood but if she did he didn’t want her to have to wake up here.

“Where are you going?” Stefan shouted when he saw Damon walking away with Elena in his arms.

“I’m getting her out of here.” Damon replied.

Stefan grabbed his arm and pulled his brother back so that they were face to face with Elena’s body in between them and said, “she is dead Damon. She’s gone.”

Careful to keep Elena’s body steady Damon jerked his arm out of the grasp of his brother. He didn’t reply or even glance back at Stefan who just stood there shaking his head as he carried Elena to the edge of the trees.

Once he got her in his car he drove as fast as he could and only stopped once he was in the driveway of the house. When he picked her up again he was just as gentle as he had been when picking her up from the ground of the clearing.

When he laid her body down on top of the comforter in his bed he knelt down beside her and grabbed her hand that was hanging off the bed with both of his. He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it lightly.

He would sit there for however long it took. She would either wake up or he would have to come to terms with the fact that she would rather die than become a monster like him.

“Please wake up Elena, please don’t be dead.” Damon whispered with his head bowed. Kneeling beside the bed, holding the hand of the girl he loved Damon cried. For the first time in ages he let the tears spill of his eyes and didn’t try to stop him. There was no one there to witness his loss of control, even if there had been he didn’t think he would be able to stop himself. It had been so long since he had felt like this, he was used to living with his emotions off. It was being with Elena that made him realize that emotions and feeling everything life had to offer was better than living with the switch turned off.

But even with his new recollection that the good was worth the bad he didn’t think he could bare it if Elena died. If she was gone there was no good to counteract the bad, if she was gone forever he had nothing. Damon couldn’t imagine life with ever seeing her smile, hearing her laugh or feeling her lips on his again.
