Chapter Twenty Eight

It would have course only been too easy for him to gain access to the large house and rescue the girl myself. However it was even easier to wait for her friends to do it. They cared about her too much to let anything happen to her and would all die to protect her. That would leave him free to do as he wished but still know that she was safe.

He was watching, safely hidden in a nearby tree, as Damon Salvatore and the young witch named Sadie approached the house. Perhaps he should warn them that the werewolf was waiting for visitors and under direct orders to tear apart anyone who got near her. However confronting them when they still had no idea who he was definitely wasn’t in his best interests right now.

Silently he listened as the witch entered the house after assuring Damon that she would be fine. Odd from what he knew about the eldest Salvatore he didn’t really seem like the type to care about the life of a witch. The rumour was that he had absolutely no regard for anyone’s life other than his own, however his love for the girl already proved that he did care.

Once she entered the house he had to rely solely on his hearing to know what was happening, it didn’t take long for her to find the room the wolf was holding Elena in. When he heard the growl Damon tried to run into the house presumably to help the witch but was stopped by what looked like an invisible barrier.

In his attempts to enter the house Damon was unable to hear what happened next but he heard everything. He heard the growl turn into cries of pain and he imagined the wolf writhing in pain on the ground as the witch rushed over to Elena.

He knew that she was unconscious still from the beating the wolf gave her and he listened to the panic the sight of her bruised face caused the witch.

It took a couple minutes for her to undo the ropes that were binding Elena to the chair and even longer for her to get Elena out of the house. As soon as they were out the door Damon grabbed Elena’s limp body and held her tightly to his chest.

He looked down at her with such worry in his eyes and gently brushed away a strand of her hair from her face that was swollen and almost completely black from bruises. It was easy for both him and Sadie to see the complete love radiating off of him when he looked at her in that way. For the millionth time he wondered why he was so intent on distancing himself from the girl he loved that much and miraculously enough loved him in return.

Still not moving he watched as Damon fed her some of his blood, her face immediately began to heal. As it did Damon carried her to the car here he gently laid her in the back seat.

He only jumped down from his perch in the tree when the quiet hum of the motor disappeared completely. Unlike when Damon had tried to enter there was no invisible barrier that stopped him from walking through the door. As soon as he figured out where Katerina and her pet wolf were staying he made sure that he would be able to gain access to it.

The witch had left the door to the room wide open and the wolf’s body was laying where she had left him unconscious. In his incapacitated state it would only have been too easy for her to kill him, it would have been as simple as her grabbing one of the knives from the drawers in the kitchen. However she was too innocent to have even thought of that even if he had hurt her friend.

This was someone who would be harder to control, because he was blinded by love for Katerina. She always managed to have that affect on people and that made Mason into a liability.
