Your character finds a probabilistic time machine, where to first?
The Rift.
The one place known to a select few that could take you anywhere in time. Its logic, construction, and reasoning went beyond anyone's understanding.Peri had been here dozens of times with her friends. She wasn't scared of the towering portal to other worlds. But today she felt uneasy. As she sat on the Rift's walkway bridge she felt selfish. Every time she'd run through previously was for the betterment of everyone else. This time she'd snuck away to use this for something personal.
She wanted to go back in time and see her mom.
How many years had it been since she'd seen the beautiful purple pearl? It felt like a lifetime. So much had happened in the time since the gem was shattered. The rebellion had its rebirth. There were new foes around every corner. There were new friends along every step of the way.
Peri just wanted to tell her mom that, even after all she'd been through, she was still fighting. She wanted to make her proud.
She stood up and walked down the bridge and took a breath. The voices in her head were telling her to turn back. She was selfish just wanting to do this for herself.
"C'mon Peri... you can do this," she whispered under her breath.
After a long bit of debate she walked forward and stepped through the Rift. For a moment the world around her fell away into colors. The heart shaped gemstone on her chest tingled and felt warm. She closed her eyes.
Warm spice.
Fresh baked bread.
The smell of tea on the stove.
Peri inhaled deeply. Home. This was home. She hadn't been here in so long. Her childhood home. She missed this.
She opened her eyes and standing in the small kitchen was Lavender. She turned and held Peri's gaze for a long moment.
"Peri?" The pearl's voice was soft and warm, albeit a little surprised. The green gem sure looked like her precious baby girl but... all grown up?
Peri felt tears instantly sting her eyes. Her voice caught in her throat. "M-mom?" Before she knew what she was doing she ran to the gem and just about collapsed in her arms, starting to silently sob. "Mom, I've missed you. I love you so much."
