Your character is asked a question that changes their life. What is it?
Appie stared at her hand. The blue gemstone semi embedded in the palm of her hand glittered in the light. For as long as she could remember she was happy how she was. Her origins were somewhat lost on her. She just knew she was a little different from any other gem she'd ever met. Their gemstones were whole shapes. Hers was fractured and only half.
Who was her other half?
She'd since learned the gem's name was Paia. The one who was her other half but in a sisterly sense. She and Paia were supposed to be one gem. But something neither of them understood happened and the gemstone the one gem was supposed to bear was split in two. And from that each half had taken on a life of its own.
Appie had been persistent in trying to befriend Paia but found where her bubbly personality was, Paia was grumpy and cold most of the time. They'd been through a lot together though and each found a way to look through each other's eyes.
Paia learned to find joy in life and the value of an encouraging word.
Appie was humbled and learned that sometimes life called for something other than rainbows and glitter.
For some time Appie wanted to know what it felt like to be whole and kept asking her twin if they could try putting their gemstones together to see if there was a way to become whole.
But Paia kept refusing.
Finally Appie found herself being asked the question she'd longed to hear:
"Do you want to see if we can become whole?"
But in the wake of the disaster they'd both witnessed, through the trials they endured, and the hardships they'd been through together... Appie was left wondering if that was what she really wanted.
She lay on her bed looking at her half of a gemstone and wondered what life would be like if she were whole. It would answer a question. But... just one, right? If she and Paia were reunited then she wouldn't have her sister. Not to mention she'd lose her sense of self too.
The more she thought about it, the more she realized she didn't want that. Sure she wondered what she was really supposed to be but at what expense?
"No," she whispered to herself, sitting up. She looked to the other bed in the room that was covered in far less stuffed animals and cuddly blankets than her own. A smile crossed her face. "I'm happy how I am. I don't need to know what we'd be like if we were one gem. I'm happier having a sister and best friend."
