The next day at school, Y/N couldn't help but replay her strange encounter with Oikawa. She found herself smiling at the memory of his playful teasing, though she quickly brushed it off. She hadn't seen him since, and honestly, she wasn't sure she ever would again. After all, their worlds didn't really collide—except for that one odd moment.
But fate had other plans.
During lunch, Y/N was making her way through the crowded cafeteria, tray in hand, looking for a quiet corner to eat. Just as she spotted a free table near the back, someone came barreling around the corner, not paying any attention to where they were going. Before she could react, the inevitable happened.
"Oof!"
Her tray went flying. The person collided with her, sending her stumbling backward, barely catching herself before she landed flat on the floor. The cafeteria erupted into a mix of gasps and stifled laughter.
"Oh no!" the culprit yelped. Y/N looked up from the wreckage of her lunch to see none other than Oikawa standing there, eyes wide and guilty as ever.
"Are you serious?" Y/N groaned, staring at her now thoroughly ruined lunch. "Twice in two days, Oikawa?"
Oikawa scratched the back of his head sheepishly, glancing down at the mess. "I'm really sorry, Y/N! I didn't see you there. I was kind of in a rush..."
"Clearly," she muttered, shaking her head in disbelief. "Is this your way of saying hello? Because it's not exactly effective."
Oikawa laughed nervously, bending down to help pick up what was left of her lunch. "Let me make it up to you. I'll buy you lunch."
"Really? I'm not sure if I trust you to carry anything now," Y/N teased, raising an eyebrow as she accepted his help.
"Hey, hey, I'm a very responsible guy!" he protested, standing up and motioning for her to follow him to the lunch line. "This was just... a fluke. I promise."
Y/N rolled her eyes but followed him anyway, still amused by the entire situation. She wasn't one of Oikawa's fangirls—she had always found the adoration he received a bit excessive. She didn't really understand the hype surrounding him, and to be honest, she had always thought the idea of fawning over a high school athlete was a bit silly. But there was something refreshing about Oikawa's over-the-top charisma. It was a welcome change from her usual routine.
As they stood in line, Oikawa kept up a steady stream of conversation, asking her questions about her classes and what she did for fun. To her surprise, she found herself laughing more than she expected.
"Wait," Oikawa said suddenly, his eyes widening as if he'd just had the greatest realization. "Do you like aliens?"
Y/N blinked, confused by the sudden shift in topic. "Aliens? Uh... I've never really thought about it."
"Oh, come on," Oikawa said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "You've got to have an opinion. Do you think they're real or not?"
Y/N couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm. "I guess anything is possible, right? I mean, the universe is huge."
Oikawa grinned like a kid on Christmas morning. "Exactly! See, you get it. I knew there was something special about you, Y/N."
She snorted. "So now I'm special because I think aliens might be real?"
"Hey, it's an important topic!" he replied, putting on an air of mock seriousness. "And it's not every day you meet someone who gets it."
Their conversation continued as Oikawa grabbed their lunches, paying for both of them despite Y/N's half-hearted protests. They found a table in the corner, away from the crowds, where they could sit and talk without interruption. Y/N was surprised by how easy it was to talk to him, and before she knew it, they were laughing over ridiculous topics—everything from conspiracy theories to his overly dramatic fan base.
Just as Y/N was about to take a bite of her sandwich, Oikawa's phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at it and sighed dramatically, slumping in his seat.
"Ugh, Iwa-chan is yelling at me again," he groaned, showing Y/N the text. It was from Iwaizumi, filled with the usual demands for Oikawa to stop goofing off and get to practice on time.
Y/N couldn't help but laugh at the dynamic between the two. "You're like a sitcom duo. I can practically hear the laugh track every time you two interact."
Oikawa chuckled. "You're not wrong. But hey, if you think Iwa-chan is bad, you should see him when he's really mad. It's terrifying."
Y/N smirked. "I'll take your word for it."
As they finished their lunch, Oikawa glanced at her with a more serious expression than before. "You know, you're pretty fun to talk to, Y/N. I don't usually get to have conversations like this."
She blinked, surprised by the sincerity in his voice. "Really? You're, like, surrounded by people all the time."
"Yeah," Oikawa said with a small smile, "but it's not the same. You're different."
Y/N wasn't sure how to respond to that, but before she could say anything, Oikawa suddenly stood up, offering her a friendly nod.
"Come on," he said, flashing her that familiar grin. "I've got practice soon, but I'll walk you to class."
Y/N hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded. "Alright, lead the way, Mr. Responsible."
As they walked through the halls, Y/N found herself smiling again. She hadn't expected to befriend someone like Oikawa—let alone enjoy it so much. But here she was, chatting and laughing her way to class with the school's most popular guy, and for the first time in a long time, she felt like something exciting was just beginning.
