The Itoshi brothers have never been the type to agree on much, but today, the tension between them feels particularly sharp.

"Stop trying to one-up me," Rin mutters as they walk together through the hallways after practice. His voice is low, clipped, but there's no mistaking the annoyance in his tone.

Sae raises an eyebrow, unbothered as usual. "You're imagining things."

"Am I?" Rin snaps, stepping in front of his older brother to block his path. "First the fake picture, now the game. You don't even care about the team, so why suddenly invite her to your practices?"

Sae's smirk is infuriating. "Because unlike you, I can get her attention without trying so hard."

Rin bristles, his fists clenching. "She's not some prize for you to win, Sae."

"Of course not," Sae replies, his voice maddeningly calm. "But if she prefers me, that's not my fault."

They stare each other down, the hallway growing colder by the second.

Their argument is cut short by the sound of laughter and chatter from around the corner. A group of students—mostly fangirls—are talking loudly, their voices carrying through the otherwise empty corridor.

"Y/n-senpai is so mysterious," one of them says dreamily.

"I know, right? She's so pretty but always so... serious," another adds.

"I've never even seen her smile," someone else chimes in.

The first girl sighs dramatically. "Whoever can make her smile has to be her soulmate. Like, it's destiny!"

The group giggles and walks away, leaving the brothers in silence.

Sae and Rin exchange a look, their earlier argument forgotten for the moment.

"She's never smiled at you, has she?" Sae asks, his tone laced with smugness.

"And you think she's smiled at you?" Rin shoots back.

Sae's smirk deepens. "Maybe I'll be the first."

Rin narrows his eyes, his jaw tightening. "We'll see about that."

Neither of them says it out loud, but the challenge is clear: whoever can make you smile more is the better brother for you.

The next few days are... odd.

It starts small. Rin waits for you by your locker, awkwardly handing you a snack before walking away without a word. Later, Sae crosses your path in the hallway and comments on how the weather "matches your mood," his dry humor clearly aimed at coaxing a reaction.

Both attempts fail, your expression as neutral as ever.

At lunch, Rin joins you uninvited, sitting silently across from you as if his mere presence will somehow do the trick. Meanwhile, Sae passes by, dropping a casual "Don't let Rin bore you too much," before disappearing again.

The boys' antics don't go unnoticed by the rest of the soccer team.

"What's going on with them?" Bachira whispers to Isagi.

"Don't ask," Isagi mutters, shaking his head.

You, of course, are oblivious to the unspoken war raging between the brothers. To you, their sudden interest feels more like a mild inconvenience than anything else.

When Rin hands you another snack the following morning, you take it with a polite nod, entirely unfazed.

When Sae holds the door open for you later that day, you step through without so much as a glance.

For the Itoshi brothers, this is only the beginning.
