A Fortress Long Forgotten

Start from the beginning

"Ah, so you’ve noticed!" Mr. Big taunted, twisting a dial on the ray gun. The red energy grew stronger, and WordGirl staggered as her body trembled, trying to stay upright, her vision growing more blurry.

Above the sound of the battle, she heard his laughter—mocking, cold, and unsettling. "How does it feel, WordGirl?" He sneered. "To be outsmarted, outmatched, and drained of your strength? Looks like it’s over for you and your little friends!"

Meanwhile, the Cybersquad made their way into one of the old fortress buildings, slamming the heavy metal door behind them. The air inside was damp and stale, and the sounds of the battle outside echoed through the thin walls.

“Why is this happening?” Matt finally asked, his voice full of frustration. “We were so close to finding the crystal, and now this?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Stewie snapped, waving his hands dramatically. “They’re after the crystal too! They knew we’d come here!”

“But how?” Digit asked, frowning. “How could they have known we’d be here?”

"He has the journal, for crying out loud!" Stewie shouted, exasperated. "You know, the one where your Protectors of Cyberspace wrote about where to find the crystals?"

"Okay, okay, let’s not argue," Inez said, raising her hands to calm everyone down. "We need to focus on finding the crystal before they do. That’s all that matters right now."

Digit fluttered up, his wing softly flapping. "Right, but where do we even start? This place is huge, and we don’t have time to check every corner."

"Let’s think," Matt said, standing tall. "The other crystals were hidden underground, right? Maybe there’s a hidden passage here."

Just then, the roof was suddenly ripped off by one of Tobey’s robots. Before the robot could grab them, they dashed for the entrance.

The Cybersquad sprinted toward the door, the robot’s giant metal fingers swiping through the air just behind them. Dust and debris rained down as the robot’s towering frame leaned into the building, its faintly glowing eyes locked on its fleeing targets.

“Come on guys! Keep moving!” Matt shouted, urging the others to run faster.

“Where exactly do you suggest we move to?!” Stewie snapped, his short legs struggling to keep up. “There’s a giant homicidal machine trying to kill us!”

“Less talking, more running!” Jackie shouted, grabbing Stewie by the arm and pulling him along.

As they rushed outside, they narrowly avoided the robot’s hand, which slammed into the ground with such force that it cracked beneath them. They quickly stopped, scanning for cover.

“Over there!” Inez pointed toward a nearby, partially collapsed watchtower.

Without hesitation, they bolted toward it, the robot thundering after them, its every step shaking the ground. Once inside, they paused to catch their breath, but the distant tremors from the robot’s pursuit reminded them they didn’t have much time.

“Okay, new plan,” Matt panted, his hands twitching nervously. “We need to lose that thing before it turns us into scrap!”

“Brilliant deduction, Captain Obvious,” Stewie muttered, earning a glare from Jackie. But their focus shifted when they heard a familiar cry.

“Whoa!!!” The Cybersquad gasped as Digit suddenly crashed to the ground, landing in a heap a few feet away from them.

“Digit!” Inez shouted as they rushed to his side. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah… I think so, Earthlies,” Digit groaned, trying to shake off the impact. But when he tried to move, he noticed something was wrong. “Uh oh.”

“Digit… your propeller!” Jackie pointed, alarmed.

Digit turned to see his propeller bent at an awkward angle. His beak dropped. “Oh, just what I needed! Now I can’t fly! How could this get any worse?”

Just then, a loud shout cut through the noise of the battle. "I think I know how!" Matt shouted, pointing toward the battlefield.

The Cybersquad followed Matt’s gaze, their expressions grim. The RED Team was being captured one by one by Tobey’s relentless robots.

The mercenaries had managed to take down many of the Zachbots, but the battlefield was now filled with broken metal and sparking wires.

But Tobey’s massive robot was a whole different problem. The team’s bullets, bombs, and explosives barely made a dent in its heavily armored frame. One by one, the RED Team was overpowered, each trapped by the unyielding grip of the mechanical giants.

“This is bad. Really bad,” Jackie said, clutching her chest in worry.

“What do we do now?” Digit squawked, his voice full of panic.

“Come on!” Peter and the Kratt brothers grabbed the Cybersquad, pulling them forward as the battle raged around them. Chris carried a weakened WordGirl, her energy drained from the Lexonite. Together, they rushed into one of the larger fortress buildings.

Once inside, they quickly barricaded the doors with anything they could find—broken furniture, steel beams, crates—but everyone knew it wouldn’t hold up for long against Tobey’s robots.

“We can’t just hide! What about the others? What about the crystal?” Matt protested, his voice breaking as he looked back toward the battlefield, where the RED Team were being dragged away by the robots.

“Forget about them!” Stewie snapped, his voice sharp with fear. “If we stay, we’re all doomed!”

Before anyone could say more, a loud crash filled the room. One of Tobey’s giant robots ripped the roof off the building, exposing them to the open sky. Sunlight flooded in as the robot loomed above, its mechanical claws reaching down toward them.

“Hang on!” Stewie yelled. He slammed his finger down on the button of his remote.

Back on the battlefield, Tobey stomped his foot in frustration. “Drat! They’ve escaped again!” He pouted, his face twisted in annoyance.

“Relax,” Mr. Big said smoothly, adjusting his tie as he turned to the captured RED Team. They were locked in a massive cage, their weapons taken, their spirits crushed. Mr. Big’s grin grew wider as he looked at them. “The Cybersquad may have slipped away, but these fools will do just fine for now.”
