One afternoon, Jayce walked up to Viktor during a quiet moment between classes, looking unusually nervous. It was a rare sight, Jayce Talis, who always seemed so self-assured, now stood shifting on his feet, a sheepish grin tugging at his lips. He rubbed the back of his neck in that way people do when they're stalling for time, as if searching for the right words.
Viktor sat at his desk, scribbling something into his notebook, his focus entirely on the intricate sketch he was working on. Jayce cleared his throat to get his attention, and Viktor glanced up, tilting his head slightly looking at Jayce.
"So, uh... prom is coming up," Jayce began, his voice casual but with a slight edge of hesitation. His fingers fidgeted with the strap of his bag, and for a moment, it seemed like he was second-guessing himself.
"Yes... and?" Viktor replied, his voice calm and steady, but his curious expression showed that he didn't entirely understand where this was going.
Jayce hesitated, his usual confidence not showing for the first time since Viktor had met him. He opened his mouth, closed it again, and then finally blurted out, "Well, I was wondering if you'd like to go. With me." The words came out in a rush, like he was afraid that if he didn't say them quickly, he might not say them at all.
Viktor froze for a moment, his pencil still hovering over the page. He didn't expect this, not from Jayce. His heart skipped a beat, and a sudden rush of emotions flooded him. Surprise, excitement, and something else he couldn't quite name all swirled together, leaving him momentarily speechless.
But as quickly as the thrill came, it was replaced by doubt. The thought of prom, being in a crowded gymnasium filled with loud music, laughter, and so many unfamiliar faces, made his chest tighten with nerves. The idea of eyes on him, even just as Jayce's date, sent a ripple of unease through him. He wanted to say yes, but the words wouldn't come.
"I... I'll think about it," Viktor said finally, his voice so soft it was almost drowned out by the noise of the classroom around them. He couldn't meet Jayce's eyes as he said it, focusing instead on the corner of his notebook.
Jayce's grin didn't waver. If he was disappointed by the noncommittal answer, he didn't show it. Instead,
he nodded with the easygoing attitude that Viktor was starting to get used to.. "Take your time. No pressure," Jayce said, his voice warm and reassuring, like he genuinely meant it.He gave Viktor one last smile, the kind that seemed to carry a little extra brightness, before turning and walking away. Viktor watched him go, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. He glanced back down at his notebook, but the designs he had been working on suddenly felt meaningless. All he could think about was Jayce, his awkwardness, his surprising vulnerability, and the small bit of hope in his voice.
Viktor sighed, leaning back in his chair. His fingers tapped against the desk as he tried to sort through what he was feeling. He wanted to say yes. He wanted to take that chance. But could he really handle the chaos of prom? The idea both excited and terrified him, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't make up his mind.
