The gymnasium was alive with motion and noise, a blur of swirling colors and booming music. Brightly dressed students filled the space, laughing, dancing, and shouting over the beat of the music. Viktor stood near the refreshment table with Sky, his hands wrapped around a cup of room temperature punch. He tried to focus on their conversation, but his mind wandered, his chest tight with an ache he couldn't quite shake.
Sky did her best to lighten the mood. "Come on, Viktor," she said with a grin. "You're at prom. Live a little! We can do the robot—it'll fit the theme of us being engineers!"
Viktor gave her a faint smile, appreciating her effort, but his attention drifted again. Across the room, Jayce stood with Mel near the edge of the dance floor. He looked as dashing as ever, his suit perfectly tailored and his smile as bright as the string lights above. But even from a distance, Viktor noticed something off about him.
Their eyes met across the room. It was brief, but the way Jayce's expression softened sent a ripple through Viktor's chest. He quickly looked away, taking a sip of his punch to distract himself.
Sky nudged him lightly. "I'm going to grab us some snacks," she said, sensing he needed a moment. Viktor nodded, watching her disappear into the crowd.
When he looked up again, Jayce was no longer standing with Mel. Instead, he was walking across the gymnasium, his steps purposeful. Viktor's pulse quickened as Jayce closed the distance between them.
"Vik," Jayce said, his voice softer than Viktor had expected. He stopped just in front of him, his hands shoved into his pockets. "I'm sorry. I messed up."
Viktor frowned, his brow furrowing. "You're at prom with Mel," he said, his tone guarded. "Shouldn't you be with her?"
Jayce shook his head, his expression earnest. "I should be with you," he said simply.
The words hung in the air, the noise of the gym fading into the background. Viktor stared at him, his mind racing. Part of him wanted to push Jayce away, to tell him it was too late, but another part, a quieter, hopeful part.. wanted to believe him.
Jayce extended a hand, his smile gentle and filled with quiet determination. "Dance with me?" he asked, his voice low, just for Viktor to hear.
Viktor's heart thudded in his chest. He glanced down at Jayce's outstretched hand, then back up at his face. For a moment, he hesitated, the fear and doubt threatening to overwhelm him. But then he thought of all the times he had let fear win, of all the things he had missed because of it.
Slowly, Viktor nodded. He set his cup down on the table and placed his hand in Jayce's.
Jayce's smile brightened, and he led Viktor toward the edge of the dance floor, where the lights were dimmer and the crowd was thinner. The music shifted to a slower song, the beat soft and steady. Jayce turned to face him, resting a hand lightly on Viktor's waist.
"I didn't think you'd say yes," Jayce admitted, his voice barely audible over the music.
"Neither did I," Viktor replied, a small, nervous smile tugging at his lips.
They swayed awkwardly at first, Viktor's movements stiff and uncertain. But Jayce didn't seem to mind. He held Viktor's gaze, his expression open and patient, and slowly, Viktor began to relax.
Around them, the world seemed to fade away. For the first time that night, Viktor didn't care about the crowd or the noise or what anyone might think. All that mattered was the boy in front of him and the way his heart felt light for the first time in days.
