The next day, during the photoshoot, Jungkook's usual intensity was missing. He posed effortlessly for the camera, but his mind was far from the flashing lights and the photographer's instructions. His eyes were distant, glazed over as he kept thinking. He barely noticed how his body had frozen in place, the thoughts weighing his mind.
The photographer noticed immediately and lowered the camera. "Jungkook, take a break," he said, his voice sharp but understanding. "You're off today. We can't keep going like this."
Jungkook blinked, shaking his head slightly to shake off the fog. "Sorry, I just—" He cut himself off, realizing how distracted he was. "I'll take a break. Sorry for holding things up."
He turned and made his way to his vanity, feeling gazes of all staff on his back. But before he could step inside, he stopped by Taehyung, who was standing at the door. Jungkook glanced up at him, his brow furrowing in frustration.
"I need my phone" Jungkook said, his voice low, almost like a whisper.
Taehyung didn't question it, just handed over the phone. "I'll wait out here," he said, his voice calm, and then let Jungkook disappear inside alone.
Jungkook sat at the vanity, his fingers fidgeting slightly, staring at the screen for a moment before unlocking it. He opened the browser and revisited his search history. His eyes scanned the results from the night before—Kang Jungmin, General Jungmin, Court Martial 2005—but everything felt like a dead end. The case was too old, too buried. There were only the basics, things Jungkook already knew. It was as though the deeper details had been deliberately erased.
His mind raced. His fingers moved swiftly as he typed new search terms, hoping to uncover something—anything—that would give him more information. But most results were either hate-filled rants about General Jungmin, or posts praising his father for his role in bringing justice. Jungkook skipped over the praise posts with a scoff, the bitter taste of his father's actions still fresh in his mind.
Nothing new. Nothing real... Jungkook thought, frustration bubbling up. He sighed deeply, his lips biting down on his nails as he stared blankly at the screen.
An idea flickered in his mind. Jimin. He had to ask him. Jimin always had connections, always knew how to dig into places people didn't want to be dug into. He quickly dialed Jimin's number, with an urgency.
The phone rang twice before Jimin picked up, his voice immediately cutting through the static. "What's up, Kook? Shouldn't your bodyguard be entertaining you right now? Or is he slacking off?"
Jungkook chuckled dryly but quickly got to the point. "As if... no, it's not about that. Listen, I think I've found something, but I need your help."
Jimin's voice dropped, the teasing tone disappearing as he leaned in. "What's going on?"
"I'm looking into a case from a while back... about General Kang Jungmin. The one from that 2005 failed rescue mission" Jungkook asked, his fingers tapping restlessly on the desk. "I need to know more about him. I've found some basic stuff, but not enough. Do you think you could ask around your community? See if anyone has any information?"
Jimin hummed thoughtfully. "Hmm... I think I can, but didn't that officer leave the country after the trial?"
Jungkook's grip on the phone tightened. "We don't know for sure. If we could find out more about him, or even track him down..." He trailed off, unsure of what he would do once he had more information. "It could help."
