Chapter 25: Shadows of the Heart

Start from the beginning

At first, I could feel the obvious distance between us in our relationship—partly due to our shared burdens and unresolved feelings—but lately, it felt like we were finding a way to bridge that gap.

We talked for over an hour, sharing stories of battle and the toll it had taken on us. I was surprised to hear how he hadn't always been as emotionless toward violence and gore. It was something he had to grow accustomed to alone, growing up. His presence, his understanding, brought me a comfort I hadn't realized I needed. The more we talked, the more my fear began to fade, replaced by a sense of connection that felt both new and familiar at the same time.

Eventually, exhaustion began to pull at me, my eyelids growing heavy as I struggled to hold back several yawns.

Thor noticed and said, "We should rest." his voice low and soothing.

I nodded, blinking sleepily. "Yeah." I admitted with a small, tired smile.

Thor shifted closer to me, pulling the covers up over both of us as we lay facing each other. But my anxiety began to creep back in, the fear of falling into another nightmare making me tense.

I was about to say something when I felt Thor's strong arms gently pull me closer, his warmth enveloping me. My hands rested on his chest.

"You're safe, Y/n." Thor whispered, his voice a deep rumble in the quiet room. He took one of my hands resting on his chest and kissed the back of it.

The sensation of his lips against my skin sent a warm shiver through me. His breath lingered on my hand before his lips softly pressed against my wrist, tender and almost reverent. The warmth of his kiss contrasted with the roughness of his lips, making the moment feel even more intimate.

"There's no need to fear when I'm here." he murmured.

His words struck something deep within me, and for a moment, I was speechless. I stared at him, my eyes wide, before I slowly nodded. I wrapped my arms around him, feeling the steady beat of his heart against my ear.

The sense of safety I had been craving finally settled over me, and I allowed myself to relax in his embrace. With Thor's comforting presence beside me, I felt the weight of my fears begin to lift.

My breathing evened out, and my body relaxed fully for the first time in weeks. As my eyes fluttered closed, I realized that, for the first time in a long while, I wasn't afraid to fall asleep.

And as I drifted off, held securely in Thor's arms, I knew that no matter what nightmares may come, I wouldn't be facing them alone.

 ***

A month had passed since that night, and with each passing day, I felt the weight of my nightmares grow lighter. Thor's presence became a steady anchor, his comforting words and warmth helping me heal in ways I hadn't expected. We spent more time together—working side by side in the garden, or taking quiet strolls around Asgard's grassy terrain.

Those moments grew into something more, and before I knew it, we were sharing the same bed more often, our connection deepening with every passing night. The nights that once felt like endless battles now offered rest, and gradually, I found myself growing more comfortable with his presence.

I slowly stirred awake, my eyes fluttering open as the warmth of the sun's rays gently caressed my face. I blinked a few times, the brightness piercing through the curtains, illuminating the room in a soft golden light.

It was the first thing I noticed when I woke up—how bright it was. The sun seemed particularly strong today, spilling its light over everything it touched. I smiled softly to myself, thinking it was going to be a sunny day.
