Andrea slid her phone into the bag she had brought along to tryouts. She lifted her head just in time to see Jaemin arriving, while Jeno and Chenle were still engrossed in a conversation about God knows what. A smile tugged at her lips as she darted towards Jaemin, weaving carefully between other participants to avoid any collisions.
"You're finally here! Thank God, I was bored as hell," she exclaimed, letting out a sigh of relief as she reached him. She gratefully accepted the big cup of iced tea she had asked for, the coolness of the drink a welcome respite from the heat.
"Yeah, sorry I took a little long. The drive-thru lines were moving slow as fuck," Jaemin replied, his annoyance evident in his tone. They began walking over to the benches where their other friends were at. "The others said they were coming to watch us. Watching us at tryouts is weird, but they all ganged up on me in the chat, so I didn't have a say," Jaemin added with a chuckle.
Andrea laughed alongside him, the shared joke lifting her spirits. "I don't mind, don't worry," she said, flashing him a bright smile. However, her smile faded as soon as she spotted the coach. A wave of anxiety washed over her. Would he question why there was a girl trying out for the boys' team? Suddenly, Andrea became acutely aware of the curious stares directed her way. To calm her nerves, she started biting the inside of her cheek, a habit she often resorted to under stress.
Jaemin, always perceptive, noticed the shift in her demeanor. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern. Andrea sensed his worry and didn't want to burden her friends with her anxieties, so she nodded, forcing a smile.
But Jaemin wasn't easily fooled. "Woman, if you don't tell me what you're thinking about right now, I will pour my coffee over your head," he joked, though his tone carried a serious edge.
Andrea's face contorted in mock horror. "Absolutely not! I can't be smelling like that today. Who do you take me for!?" she retorted, her expression gradually softening when she realized he wasn't joking.
She sighed, resigning herself to his insistence. "Fine, okay. So, what if I don't get in because it's not like they can break rules just to fit a girl in?"
Jaemin's eyes sparkled with mischief as he tried to lighten her mood. "Easy. You just jump them!" he suggested, his playful tone eliciting a genuine laugh from Andrea. She looked up at him, amusement dancing in her eyes before she suddenly put on a straight face.
"Boy, you funny, ain't you," she said sarcastically, delivering a gentle smack to the side of his head.

Tryouts had begun. The sky was cloudy and it was warm on the field. Andrea, Jeno, and Jaemin had been warming up with the other potential teammates, for the past 10 minutes. Andrea had taken off her hoodie, leaving her in a sports bra and shorts. She heard gasps and whispers and looked around her to notice the guys on the team staring at her. The coach had come up to her and asked her, "Andrea why did you remove your hoodie? That is very distracting to your teammates."
Andrea looked up at him not even fazed. "You say this is distracting but mind you, nearly all of them are completely shirtless. Is it distracting 'cause I'm a woman? Or can't the men concentrate on the game and not what doesn't truly matter? I don't mean any disrespect but it would genuinely be stupid if my body was the reason I didn't get on the team. Please can we focus on our skills instead?" She said as she tossed her hoodie to the bench that was behind her.
The coach stayed silent for a few seconds that felt like whole minutes. "Fair enough. Get on the field, guys." All of the competitors ran further out into the field. Andrea scanned the guys on her sides. Not one of them intimidated her, including her two friends. Coach had announced the first drill.
Andrea's stomach roiled with excitement as she joined the line for the 40-yard dash. She inhaled deeply and concentrated on the work at hand. Her legs pumped with strength as she rocketed off the line when it was her turn. Her time was quicker than she had anticipated when she reached the finish line. She gained confidence as she saw some of the other players nod in approval.
The tackling drills came next. Andrea's gaze was fixed on the tackling dummy as she faced a bigger opponent. Her determination drove her actions as she summoned her inner strength. She screamed and slammed the dummy down, sending it crashing to the ground. Coach, who was impressed, raised his eyebrow, regretting that he ever doubted her at first glance.
Andrea's abilities and toughness were clear as the training went on. Her arm was accurate and strong, and she performed exceptionally well in the passing drills. She read the plays and made snap decisions while playing with intellect and intensity during the scrimmages. With the ball safely tucked under her arm, she ran down the field after intercepting a pass. She was too quick to be caught by the other players, and she scored a touchdown that got her teammates to applaud and give her high-fives.
Andrea was tired yet excited by the end of tryouts. It was evident that she had put her all into it. The players were assembled for a last huddle by coach. "I've noticed a lot of promise in the world. The roster will be posted tomorrow." Although her body was hurt, Andrea's spirits were high as she left the field. She was aware that she had proven herself to not just the coach and the other players, but to herself as well.
She had grabbed her bottle from her bag and drank her water that she had brought with her as she noticed her Jeno and Jaemin walking up to her, equally as tired as she was, and her other friends, who had come to support the three, walking down from the bleachers to come over to them. The group had been cheering for the three players on the field the whole time. It was evident in their hoarse voices that they had been yelling to hype them up.
