For a split second, Addison shamelessly calculated.
Fifty thousand dollars could buy a small bathroom in Westchester.
She could cut three years off her struggle.
But fifty thousand dollars was too much. Addison couldn't accept it. "You're too generous. I just took her to the hospital. It wasn't any trouble at all."
The Butler smiled. "Please, take it. I'm just an employee. If I don't do the job properly, it'll affect my paycheck. Just think of it as doing a good deed."
"No, really."
Addison declined a couple of times and then hurried away.
Shortly after she left, the Butler returned to the hospital room.
Grandma Steele had come to her senses.
"Did that girl leave?"
"Yes, she did. Didn't take the money," the Butler said helplessly. "I didn't expect college students these days to be so selfless."
Grandma Steele murmured, "I feel like I recognize that outfit. I feel like I've seen it somewhere before."
"There are a lot of outfits like that. It's normal for it to look familiar."
Grandma Steele was still a little confused. She thought about it for a moment, but then dismissed it.
Addison hadn't taken the money, and she felt bad about it. "Giving money is so vulgar. People are more sensitive these days. Let's give her something else. Did you get her contact information?"
"It's on the hospital registration form. I'll go find it later."
Soon after, Ethan Steele arrived.
"Grandma!" His voice preceded him.
Grandma Steele snorted. "Now you're afraid, huh? You were so smug in the office."
Ethan asked seriously, "What happened?"
Grandma Steele said dismissively, "Heatstroke. Nothing serious."
She knew that her heart had always been a little weak, but she didn't want Ethan to worry.
She felt guilty about lying to him about being sick last time.
She wouldn't joke about things like that again.
After staying for a while, Grandma Steele was discharged from the hospital.
She still had to prepare for dinner that evening, and instructed the chef to make some of her favorite dishes.
She told the Butler, "Ask that girl to come over for dinner too. I really like her face. She looks a lot like a friend of mine."
The Butler agreed.
Originally, Ethan wasn't planning to go home for dinner, but Grandma Steele had almost had an incident. He compromised and agreed to have dinner at home.
That afternoon, when Addison went to visit her mother, she received a transfer of fifty thousand dollars on PayPal.
She was shocked.
The Butler called soon after. "I'm sorry, Miss. I know this is very presumptuous, but my Grandma Steele really wants to thank you, so she would like to invite you to her home for dinner. Are you free tonight?"
Addison laughed wryly. "There's really no need to be so formal."
"Miss, you deserve it. Please accept it."
Addison thought for a moment and said, "I'm free tonight. Send me the address and I'll go see Grandma."
The Butler: "Tell me your location, and I'll arrange for a car to pick you up."
