The Burrow was exactly as (Y/N) remembered—slightly chaotic, impossibly cozy, and filled with warmth. The mismatched furniture, the enchanted knitting needles clacking away in the corner, and the delicious scent of whatever Mrs. Weasley was cooking made it feel like stepping into a warm hug.
After the heaviness of the train ride and her last encounter with Cedric, the Weasleys' home felt like a much-needed escape.
"Up you go, dear," Molly said as she levitated (Y/N)'s trunk up the rickety staircase. "You'll be in Ginny's room with her. I figured you girls would have plenty to talk about."
Ginny grinned at (Y/N) from the stairs. "Plenty, indeed." She shot a glance at Fred, who only smirked in return.
(Y/N) rolled her eyes, a knowing smile playing on her lips. She wasn't about to be interrogated about Cedric—not yet, at least.
"Come on," Ginny tugged her up the stairs. "I'll show you where you can put your things."
As (Y/N) followed, she couldn't help but feel grateful. No prying questions from Mrs. Weasley. No mention of Cedric. Just the simple, comforting routine of being welcomed into a family that never asked for explanations.
Later that evening, the Weasleys gathered around the long wooden table for dinner, and (Y/N) found herself between Fred and Ginny. The atmosphere was light, full of laughter, as the boys argued over who had the best Quidditch plays.
"Oh, please," Ginny groaned, stabbing her fork into a roasted potato. "If we're talking best plays, I should be in this conversation. You lot are just too scared to admit I'm better."
"You're barely on the team!" Ron shot back.
"Yet still better," Ginny smirked.
(Y/N) chuckled, enjoying the back and forth. The warmth of being here, surrounded by laughter and good food, settled her in a way she hadn't realized she needed.
Fred nudged her lightly. "You've been awfully quiet," he noted, though his tone wasn't accusing. Just curious.
(Y/N) shrugged, swirling her mashed potatoes around her plate. "Just... enjoying the company."
Fred's sharp eyes studied her for a moment before he grinned. "Well, if you're looking for entertainment, George and I have a little project planned for tonight. Care to join?"
Molly's voice cut through the conversation. "If that 'project' involves any sort of explosions, the answer is no."
Fred and George exchanged a look.
"No explosions," Fred promised.
Molly squinted at them before sighing. "Fine. But if I hear so much as a single bang—"
"Not a peep, Mum," George assured her, grinning.
(Y/N) laughed, feeling the tension she had been carrying all day finally begin to fade.
Maybe coming here had been the right decision after all.
That Night
Ginny had already dozed off, the soft rise and fall of her breathing filling the small room. But (Y/N) lay awake, staring at the ceiling, the day playing over in her head.
She had needed the distraction today. The laughter, the comfort, the sheer normalcy of it all. But now, in the quiet, her thoughts drifted back to Cedric.
His expression at the station.
The hope in his eyes when he thought she was coming home with him.
The way his shoulders had slumped when she turned away.
