Heart and Soul is a Photography piece recently submitted to the Hyogo Youth Arts Competition by 17-year-old Kimura Keiko. The photograph in which she took at a local park of a couple and color graded. The submitted piece quickly grew lots of attention at the competition where it placed 2nd and then went viral on social media. We learn more about the piece in our interview with Kimura. Continue to read.
"I just thought they were embodying what I'd imagined genuine love to look like—just enjoying each other's company. Their connection seemed so natural!" Kimura stated. We then questioned if she had any other connection to the photographed couple.
A nervous expression settles on the young photographer's face. "No, I didn't know them. They were strangers—and to be honest I'm not 100% sure they are—or were a couple but I would sure hope so!" She laughs off.
—How do you hope they feel if they knew the success the photograph has had?
"I hope they aren't upset or uncomfortable. I had no clue it'd get so big—it was seriously just for class. The assignment was to find something or someone out and about that seemed genuine—in their element— and we had to give the photo a story. Which helped me also do an assignment for my creative writing class. Then I thought why not submit it to the competition for fun?"
—Do you have anything to say to the couple in the photo?
"I would love to speak to the two of you if you see this! Again I'm so sorry if this has upset or made either of you uncomfortable in any way."
The article wrapped up and both you and Osamu stared at the phone dumbfounded. "No way," you shake your head in disbelief "How—why are there so many articles about it?" you question and you scroll through Bokuto's phone. "I mean it's a good photo don't you think?" Bokuto questioned as he hesitantly snatched this phone from your grip.
"It's great," you nod "But, it's just us being us? I don't get it," you shrug as you stand from your seat. The jet had landed when you were woken up by Bokuto. Yet you took your time being shocked over the article and reading it. "Isn't that the point of it?" Osamu raises from beside you, his hand lingers near yours before he casually interlocks your fingers as you walk down the aisle of the jet. "She said she thought we portrayed genuine love, isn't that true?" he finishes.
You think of the photo again, this time with a new perspective. That day and that moment hadn't seemed like anything interesting to you at the moment. Now, having the view of an outsider like the girl Kimura Keiko. You could see how your—at the time—friendship looked romantic.
