(Y/n)'s POV

"Thank you, Newt." I whispered, tears filling my eyes. "Thank you for standing guard and everything."

He hugged me back, resting his chin on my head. "Always."

We parted. "How do you feel?"

I signed. "I'm just glad I'm still alive. Still a bit cautious, but I'll live."

"Come on."

I followed him into the cornfields with tired legs.

The job was simple. Pick the corn and toss it into the basket. It worked for a while and I let the rhythm take over.

Then, out of nowhere...

"I'll give you ten seconds."

I blinked and turned to look at him. "What?"

Newt smirked. "Ten... nine..."

"Oh, no." I dropped the corn in my hand. "You are not..."

"Eight."

"Newt, I swear..."

"Seven."

I didn't wait for six. I turned on my heel and ran deeper into the cornfield.

The dry leaves whipped at my arms as I ducked between the stalks.

By the time he reached zero, I was crouched behind a thick stalk, hands pressed over my mouth to keep from laughing.

Silence.

"I'll come and get you..."

I bit my lip, trying so hard not to make a sound. I could hear him moving through the field.

Then it stopped.

I frowned.

Still nothing. Then I moved, making a sound.

Arms wrapped around my waist.

"GOTCHA!"

I screamed. Loud.

Newt tackled me to the ground, and we crashed into the dirt.

"You!" I shrieked, struggling against him, but he was laughing so hard he had no strength left to hold me down.

"You should've seen yourself..." he gasped between wheezes.

"You cheated!" I shoved at him, but he just rolled onto his back.

"I won," he corrected.

"Did not!"

"Did so!"

"Did not!"

"(Y/n)." He turned his head, grinning at me, breathless. "You lost. Accept it."

I groaned, dropping back onto the ground beside him, staring up at the bright sky. My heart was still racing, but for the first time since last night, it wasn't from fear.

"Come on, let's pick the rest of the corn." Newt said, standing up with a smirk.

Cutting vegetables was not how I wanted to spend my afternoon, but Frypan had begged me to help with dinner.

So there I was, in the kitchen hut, cutting carrots.

Frypan had just stepped out, mumbling something about needing more herbs, leaving me alone.

And then...

Two arms appeared on either side of me, trapping me against the counter.

I didn't need to look back to know who it was.
