I pulled the ivy as hard as I could, every muscle in my arms screaming. Alby's weight made it nearly impossible to lift him, and the vines kept slipping in my grasp. Thomas was in front of me, pulling as hard as he could.

Behind us, Minho muttered, shaking his head furiously. "Why did you run into this damn Maze? Huh? Why? We are already dead."

I didn't answer.

A metallic screech cut through the air.

My heart turned to ice.

Griever.

"We need to go," Minho said sharply. "Now."

"Just a little more," I gasped, trying to loop the ivy around something, anything, to keep Alby from slipping.

"No, we needed to go. Now," Minho snapped.

"Come on, Minho, just a bit." Thomas said.

"No.. it's here. Come on, (Y/n). Come with me." Minho tried to convince me, slowly letting go of the ivy.

I shook my head. "I can't."

His jaw tightened. He hesitated for a second, eyes flicking between me and Thomas. And then he ran. "I'm sorry, little one."

I barely registered the words before he was gone.

Panic shot through me, but I didn't stop. Thomas and I gave one final, desperate yank, and Alby was up, his body hidden behind the ivy. My hands were shaking, but we had done it. He was safe.

And then we heard it.

A low, metallic whir, followed by the sickening click-click-click of spindly legs moving way too fast.

We barely hid behind the corner before the Griever came into view. It was massive...half-machine, half-creature, its body shifting as it scanned the area. I held my breath, pressing myself against the cold stone, praying it wouldn't hear the pounding of my heart.

Thomas barely whispered, "Okay. We need to..."

The Griever's head snapped toward us.

Shit.

"RUN!"

I was already moving. My feet hit the ground so fast it felt like I wasn't even touching it. The walls blurred past me. The sound of the Griever's clicking, grinding limbs was right behind us, too close. Way too close.

Thomas was running right next to me. "Left!" he yelled.

Without thinking, I turned.

Then I realized...he hadn't.

After a few more seconds I skidded to a stop, spinning around. "Thomas?!"

Shit, shit, shit. That ass went right.

The Griever's mechanical screech echoed through the Maze. It followed him.

No!

I turned, my chest rising and falling too fast. The walls all looked the same.

"Thomas!" I shouted.

I ran.

My legs burned as I sprinted toward the sounds of the fight, twisting and turning through the Maze. My breath came in ragged gasps, my heartbeat so loud in my ears that I could barely think.

A dead end.

I cursed, slamming my fist against the wall.

"Damn it!" I cursed.

Then I heard a scream.

It was Thomas. I took off again, rounding corner after corner, trying to reach him.
