We were in the Maze.
That's all I knew. They were all in front of me...Thomas, Teresa, Frypan, Minho, Chuck.
I was behind them. Limping. My legs were heavy. I could hear Newt's breath beside me, uneven from his own limp. But I wasn't really with them.
I don't know how much time passed. I don't know how many turns we took. Everything felt like a blur. The stone walls. The pounding of feet. The sound of my own breathing.
And somewhere in all of it, I realized I was crying.
The tears were just there...rolling down my cheeks without a sound. And in my head, all I could see was him.
Gally.
Standing there with that look in his eyes. That hurt. That fear. Trying to hold it all back.
Letting me go.My heart clenched, hard.
No.
I stopped. Just like that.
"No," I breathed out. "No, no, no..."
Newt turned, confused. "(Y/n)...?"
"I can't...I need to go back." My voice cracked. My heart felt like it was being ripped out. "If we leave him there, he's gonna die. The Grievers are gonna come for him, and I just—I can't leave him like that. Not Gally."
I spun to turn around, already ready to run back into the dark.
But Newt grabbed me by the shoulders and turned me back. "Stop," he said, louder than I expected. "(Y/n), no."
"You don't get it," I said, my voice breaking. "I love him."
He looked at me, jaw tight. "I know."
"I can't leave him," I whispered.
"He made his choice."
I shook my head, tears blurring the path in front of me. "But what if he thought I'd stay? What if he didn't mean it?"
Newt's hands stayed on my arms. "You think going back changes that? You think dying with him proves something?"
I didn't answer. I just stood there, my chest heaving.
"You go back now," he said, softer, "you die. And I won't let that happen."
"Come on, let's get out of here." He added pulling me slightly.
We caught up with the others.
Thomas stopped. His hand lifted, signaling us to freeze. He leaned around the corner, just enough.
I saw it in his face before he even said a word.
A Griever. Waiting. Blocking the exit.My grip tightened around the spear Minho had given me. My palms were sweating. I looked down at my still injured leg and remembered the Griever attack.
Minho pulled Chuck closer and shoved the key into his hand. "Stay close."
Chuck nodded, trembling.
Thomas turned back to all of us. "Once we get there, it'll activate the door."
He looked at each of us, and his voice dropped, calm but firm. "We stick together. We do this together. We will get through this."
"We get out now..."
I felt it right then, deep in my chest.
This might be the end.
This might be the last two minutes of my life.
And somehow, that thought didn't scare me as much as it should have.Thomas stepped closer and gently placed his hand on the back of my neck. Our foreheads touched, and we closed our eyes. Just for a second. Just long enough to remember who we were.
