It was during the peak of the summer and the wind barely blew around the city, so the humid air was trapped between the tall buildings and the lack there of trees nor roof to cast the people up with shadows added the intense warmth. Or as Jisoo liked to call it 'it feels like a rotisserie chicken in the oven.'
While it's much nicer to have the sun not burning her skin, Jisoo thought it would at least still be better to ride that bike so she could get to her destination faster and let less heat seep through her body. Growing up not really rich had Jisoo always having to be grateful for anything that she had since she never knew when those things would be taken away. Into adulthood, she realized lots of things weren't supposed to be that uncomfortable, but at least she grew up and that's all that mattered to her somehow.
Poor probably wasn't the word that could describe Jisoo's family of four. She grew up with her half-sister Park Chaeyoung, her loving stepfather, and her caring mother in the edges of the big city, in a small house-which was at least under their mother's name for ownership-that was a little cramped with barely any ventilations. Chaeyoung was only two years younger than her and so they always went to school together. Although they lacked financially most of the time, they still manage to survive every other day.
Her stepfather, who worked as a cook in a small restaurant, paid for almost all the house expenses, although he had to work park time to actually pay everything. Their mother, who worked as an elementary school teacher, paid for their education and daily spendings on food and electricity. They didn't have a car, but each of them had bikes. Jisoo and Chaeyoung, who topped their classes always, managed to get through twelve years of education with full ride scholarships.
Poor probably wasn't the word that could define Jisoo's family life. Perhaps, the better word would be middle-class, or maybe, lower middle-class. They weren't rich enough to actually live comfortably without worrying if they would still have their electricity on by the next day, but they weren't poor enough to actually receive help from the government. So, they had no choice but to live day by day as those invisible people.
It was the summer where Jisoo had finally turn 21. That meant she could finally be able to work part time at actual big companies, instead of being a tutor as she usually did since she was 14. Therefore, she prepared herself.
There was this white floral dress she never wore that she finally wore to fit her ethereal figure, paired with a white cardigan so her outfit would seem more modest for huge companies. With her long jet black hair tied up to the back, she rode her bike to the heart of the city.
She might look like the first love of every romance movie character ever, but love was the last thing she could think about. Well, even though some boys and girls eyed her since she was in middle school and were consistently chasing her, she could not care less. Instead, she was more interested on competing with them academically which caused her to thrive even more and lead her into the huge amounts of achievements and acknowledgements that were listed on the CV she brought that day.
Jisoo arrived just in time of the interview. She let out a breath of relief, realizing she wasn't late. "Okay, Jisoo, you got this," she mumbled to herself, trying to lift her own spirits up.
The company's tower was tall and hovering, much like those haunted trees that was both alluring and felt like protecting but also a tad bit scary and intimidating. That very company was hiring interns for a new division-something to do with innovation and public outreach, a place where image and substance were meant to blend, though no one really knew how. It was the kind of place where the break room had a smoothie bar but the interns could just hover around and drank instant coffee anyway. Where the CEOs smiled down from elevator screens in glossy interviews, always saying they believed in 'the next generation.'
