What if the universe decided to rewrite their story?
Jennie gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled hands. Her breath came in sharp, uneven bursts. The windshield wipers beat back the rain, but it's not enough to clear the blur of her tears.
Eight years. Eight years and she's still holding pieces of herself that never fit back together.
She leaned forward, forehead pressing against the wheel, her body trembling as a sob escapes her throat. She didn't care who sees her like this. She didn't think anyone would.
But someone did.
"Jisoo?"
Jisoo's smile was quiet, hesitant. "Jennie."
For a long moment, neither spoke. The city murmurs around them, but inside this little pocket of time, it's just the two of them and the ghost of who they were.
Jisoo immediately opened the car's passenger door and let herself in, sinking on the seat she used to lay herself on way too long ago.
Jennie exhaled shakily, her eyes scanning Jisoo's face like she's trying to reconcile memory with reality. Her hands clutched the caramel and handkerchief like her mind clutched memories of Jisoo for years.
"You—you just appeared," Jennie muttered, voice trembling.
Jisoo shrugged gently, her eyes kind. "You looked like you needed someone. I was just passing by."
The silence between the melted slowly.
"It's been eight years, huh." Jisoo looked away. Her eyes watched the streets beneath them, reminiscing how they first met before destiny decided to bring them close once again.
"It really has been eight years." Jennie swallowed her own spit, trying to reconcile with her conditions right then.
Jennie let out a small laugh, cracked and wet with tears. "Of all the people who could've been passing by."
"And had to meet you crying like this, like the first time you saw me here bawling myself out." Jisoo smirked. "Do you want to get out of the car?" Jisoo asked, gently. "Just for a bit? It's okay if you don't."
Jennie nodded, dazed. She opened the door, and Jisoo shifted immediately to cover her with the umbrella. Apparently, it had drizzled the moment Jisoo entered her car. They stood under it together, the closeness awkward but warm.
Jennie's breath was still shaking, but something about Jisoo's presence began to ground her.
"I didn't think I'd ever see you again," Jennie whispered.
Jisoo didn't answer right away. Then: "Neither did I." A pause. "But I'm glad I did."
Jennie closed her eyes. The rain kept falling. The ache in her chest didn't vanish, but it was eased.
Jisoo was still here.
And somehow, that's enough—for then.
Jennie locked the car. She decided to embrace herself and walk with Jisoo towards a clearer sidewalk where they could sit side by side.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like my prayers have been answered," replied Jennie. "I miss you, I'm sorry."
"I do too." Jisoo sighed. "I'm sorry I didn't reach out to you... I thought I made it clear that I didn't want to bother you, but I really did miss you and when I wanted to text and call you, I felt like it was too late."
"Me too. I'm sorry I didn't call you again, even when nights were miserable and I dreamt about you," answered Jennie.
It felt like a closure. A forgiveness. A final answer.
"You dreamt about me?"
"Scandals might be around, but I haven't had any relationships since I met you," explained Jennie. "Because... because I haven't— I haven't moved on."
For a while, they watched the rain drenched the streets. The summer rain covered the pavement with water, and they could only watch as the inevitable fell pouring down.
"How's life?" Jennie asked. She finally had let go of the guilt that was eating her from the inside out.
"Good," answered Jisoo. "I'm a model and author now."
"Still in touch with Lisa?"
"Kind of. She told me stories about you... sometimes."
Jennie smiled faintly, hugging her arms around herself as they sat shoulder to shoulder on the low stone wall, the umbrella tilting slightly between them.
"She did?" Her voice was small, almost disbelieving.
Jisoo nodded, her damp hair sticking to her forehead."She said you were still you. Still stubborn. Still...beautiful."
Jennie laughed, a breathless, broken sound. "Lisa always liked to exaggerate."
"I don't think she exaggerated enough," Jisoo said quietly.
The words hung between them, fragile as a soap bubble.
Jennie tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, unsure how to meet Jisoo's gaze. "Hey," she said, voice trembling. "Do you hate me?"
Jisoo tilted her head, a smile tucked on the corner of her lips. "Do you?"
"How could I? I was the one who left. I think I'm supposed to be the one who feels sorry and guilty."
"Are you?"
Jennie sighed. Her gaze shifted towards Jisoo. There was this softness in Jisoo's look that gave her the courage to meet her eyes. "Yes," she muttered, faltered, "yes, I do."
"I never hated you," Jisoo countered immediately, fiercely, in one breath. "I hated that we hurt each other. I hated that... we let each other go." There was no doubt in her voice, only certainty of pain and truth for knowing how they thought letting go was the only option.
Jennie blinked rapidly against the sting of tears. The city lights shimmered through the rain, blurry and golden, like the universe was crying with them.
"I never stopped missing you," Jisoo whispered.
"Neither do I."
The cars passed by the streets. The air no longer felt like suffocating nostalgia, even when it reminded them of their past, but rather something anew as if looking to a future they were both willing to start ahead.
"How was Finland?" Jisoo asked.
"Beautiful," answered Jennie, "but missing you all day and every day made it feel like a hinder for my happiness."
"Our happiness," countered Jisoo.
The sky felt clearer.
"I love you." Three words. Eight letters. It could be said in a heartbeat, but it was never said before they went apart. Finally, Jennie said it. Finally, she uttered what she had in her head for the past eight years, together or not: she loved Jisoo. No, she didn't love her because she was the medication to unhappiness, but just because.

Jennie stood up.
"Wanna come with me?"
"You know I won't say no."
