Jisoo gently squeezed Chaeyoung's shoulder. "You can do this."
Chaeyoung nodded. Her eyes were fierce. It was actually just another day of school, but Chaeyoung had just decided to confront her crush and ask him out. So, she went to school with all her strength, and her will crumpled in her heart.
Jisoo went back to her room afterwards, feeling the gentle silence in the room as she was all alone, especially when everyone in the house was gone. She laid her head on her pillows while trying to forget and let go of her worldly burdens (meaning: college assignments) since that was her weekly break day anyways.
Her eyes stared up to the white ceilings, while her brain was fleeting around Maldives.
She thought of how the week passed like loose change spilling down a drain. Jisoo barely noticed where the days went — lectures, part-time tutoring, helping her mom with the groceries, fixing the leaky sink in the bathroom, and trying not to spiral every time she thought about how close she was to losing her scholarship if she didn't find a way to earn more.
By that afternoon, the sky was yawning open with a promise of rain, and Jisoo found herself too bored to stay in as she couldn't take a rest with all her worries instead, so she just went out.
Right at the moment she stepped out of her gates, a small ding notified her that someone sent a message. It was Chaeyoung apparently.
"Hey, uhm, so I forgot to print for my art project and the deadline is... kind of close... like... today? Yeah, so if you're at home now, please kindly print and drop it off by my school?" Chaeyoung basically pleaded through that voice note and it scratched a part of Jisoo's brain that didn't want to be bothered for the rest of the day initially. But a sister got to do what she got to do.
Standing in front of a small print shop, clutching a battered USB and a roll of half-taped poster paper for Chaeyoung's last-minute art submission, Jisoo sighed.
"How could she forget the deadline was today," Jisoo muttered under her breath, pushing open the glass door with her elbow. "This idiot."
The inside of the shop smelled like ink and old laminate. A single employee waved lazily from behind the counter. "Printer's down," he said with his eyes barely open and his voice spewed out with barely any energy. "Gotta use the self-service machines."
Of course.
Jisoo groaned silently. But she nodded anyways, grateful she had at least some coins for the machine, and hurried over to the corner unit. She fumbled with the USB—since it was newly bought, then inserted it into the port, and started tapping through the screen.
In a wonderful turn of events, the printer sputtered. Then blinked. Then died.
"No, no, no," she hissed. "Argh! Come on, not now."
She tapped the screen again. The lights flickered once—and then darkness. The entire machine had shut down.
"God."
She stared at it. Blinked. Took a breath.
Then groaned softly, and ran a hand down her face.
"I can't believe this," she muttered. "Why the fuck am I always suffering like this?"
"I don't know, don't ask me." The voice came from behind her. Casual, low, with that kind of easy confidence that people were either born with or paid for with therapy and time. Jisoo turned—
—and froze.
Jennie.
Wearing an oversized black hoodie, a tote bag—with bold letter spelled IDGAF—slung on her shoulder, a cold drink in one hand. Her cherry red hair was tied up in a bun with a pencil, strands falling over her cheeks. She seemed...
