Cruel summer struck again. It was July in Finland. The wind was soft and caressing, heartfelt and all in all lovely. The sun shined throughout the days, and people partied under the bright sky.
Eight years had gone by. Twenty eight years old Jennie stood on her balcony, sipping wine while looking at the beautiful rivers and woods across her given humble mansion. There was something serene about how everything looked and felt. But nothing could quite satisfy her, as if something was missing.
A young successful artist Kim Jennie was widely loved by the world, especially by the royals she painted portraits for. She went to several countries in Europe, building a name for herself and creating riches and wealth that could be insured for generations to come.
After painting the royals, she decided to paint sceneries which was available to the public. People said her paintings evoked warmth in their hearts, and felt nurtured like they had never been before. Even the critics fell head over heels for her artworks that she was offered a chance to hang her works in museums.
It was beautiful, truly.
For those eight years, Jennie lived in comfort, usually alone with her cat Kuma. Sometimes, her parents would visit, no longer nagging about her career path and appreciating her instead for her success. Some other times, Lisa would come along while bringing snacks and goods Jennie might had missed from Korea.
However, really, Jennie longed and waited for something else. For someone else.
Clearly, Jennie was grateful. She enjoyed every passing moment and cherished every single second of chances given to her. Kuma was a bliss to her and her life alone was wonderful. Although, something was not quite to her extent, something was not quite to her taste.
Jennie loved coffee for its bittersweetness. Though, still, it didn't change the fact that it was bitter.
She calmly sighed. Her mind was crossing over the horizons, through the lakes and forests, watching countless sunrises and sunsets, wondering through endless beauties she had painted and wanted to pour in paint. Yet, she longed for something else... perhaps, a muse?
It was a quiet time. The birds were chirping joyfully. The sounds of leaves rustling against each other. There whistles and rushes of water splashing from the boats crossing. Jennie looked at the wisteria she grew in her garden, longing.
"Miss Kim?"
Jennie looked behind. "Oh, it's you, Bradford."
"I brought Chen along," he replied. "How are you feeling?"
Jennie smiled. She let her glass of wine be put away on the small table. Her cat Kuma jumped onto her and Jennie carried her as she talked to her friends.
"Well, not that good, but I can assure you guys that I'm alright." Jennie chuckled with a calculated laughter. It was a genuine chuckle, sure, it wasn't fake one, sure, but it wasn't quite the laughter she let aloud and freely but rather practical just to reassure the others. "Is everything alright? It's rather unusual to find you guys visiting me in the middle of the day."
"It's midnight, Kim," replied Chen as she put a small and thoughtful gift on Jennie's table: a bottle of high end ginger ale. "Or are you not aware of the time?"
"Ah, sorry. It's been eight years since I actually lived here, but it still felt like it was yesterday... maybe, I'm still not really used to these Finland summers."
The three found themselves sat with each other on the couch.
"I guess you still can't feel like home," chimed in Bradford, instantly. "Or perhaps, you miss your home in Seoul?"
