"Just don't die on me, alright?" he whispered.
"Never," I said, forcing a breath. Forcing strength.
But deep down, I didn't care what happened to me.
Not really.
Gally hadn't come with me.
And something inside me had cracked in half the moment he let go. The ache in my chest was so deep, it felt like breathing through glass.
I looked at the others...at Chuck, at Minho, at Newt, Fry, Teresa. They deserved to make it out.
I would fight for that.
Thomas gave a sudden yell and without another second of hesitation, we all turned the corner.
It was like running toward death itself. One swing of that tail, and it could throw us all off the edge.
But still...we ran.
The boys stabbed their spears into the creature's body. I held mine tight, blood pounding in my ears, heart screaming louder than my voice ever could.
We pushed the Griever, shouting, stabbing. Minho rammed his spear under its body. Frypan shoved at its side with a roar. Thomas was beside me, sweat and blood on his face. I jabbed the spear forward again and again.
It shrieked. And then...it fell over the edge.
But there wasn't time to breathe.
"Chuck!" I heard someone scream...and then I saw him.
The key.
It had slipped from Chuck's hand, and he was chasing it...too close to the edge.
"CHUCK!" I shouted, and Teresa ran with me. He dove for it, catching it just before it skidded off the edge. I grabbed his arm, Teresa grabbed the back of his shirt, and we yanked him back with all we had.
More screaming behind us.
I looked up.
Two more Grievers.
Clawing their way up.
"Go!" Thomas shouted, "Get to the door!"
We ran. Spear in hand, heart somewhere in my throat, I ran through the corridor with Chuck and Teresa. The others backed away, still fighting the new Grievers with all the strength they had.
And then I saw it.
A door.
Big, metal, waiting.
But it was closed.
"No...no no no no.." I slammed my hands on it. "It's not opening!"
Teresa was banging next to me. Chuck was trying to find a panel.
Behind us, the Grievers shrieked again. I turned. One of them lunged toward Frypan, tail swinging. Minho stabbed again, but it only growled and pushed closer.
Then I saw it. The red light.
"THOMAS!" I shouted, "There's a code! EIGHT NUMBERS!"
Thomas's eyes widened. "MINHO!"
"Seven...one...five...!" Minho shouted as loud as he could.
He got to the third number when one of the Grievers dropped from the ceiling...straight on him.
"MINHO!" I screamed.
It pinned him down.
He fought back. Pushing its jaws away with the strength he had left.
