District 12 was dead. Everyone was even gloomier than usual. The streets were still filled with people but the crowd gave off an uncomfortable vibe. No one seemed like themselves. No one. Not even you.

You feel numb as you walk down the streets of District 12 outside of the markets. Smoke rises from the top of the coal mining building which make a couple of people nearby cough. You ignore the smell as you walk to the hills.

You shimmy between the hole in the fence and walk into the forest. The air was so much better out here, and it was greener, more beautiful, and much more peaceful.

You make your way past the forest towards some more hills where you see Gale waiting for you. He's sitting on the ground and fiddling with the grass.

"Hello." You say, sitting next to him.

"Hey," he smiles at you.

He reaches out to hold your hand and with your other, you pull out half a loaf of burnt bread from your pocket. You show Gale and he brakes off the end of it, halving the already halved loaf, and tapping it against yours.

"Cheers." He says.

"Cheers." You mock.

You both take a bite from the burnt bread and sit in silence, just listening to the sound of the wind against the grass and the chirping of nearby birds from the forest.

Gale rubs his thumb against the skin of your hand and you turn to look at him. He stares at you and you raise an eyebrow.

"What?"

"I love you, you know that right?" He says.

"Yes, of course. I love you too."

He takes a breath before tighting his hold on your hand slightly.

"What do you say, then? Let's run away from here. Together. Start a new life beyond District 12. We both can survive living in the forest, so why not?"

You gape at Gale. Run away? Live in the forest? Why?

"Why would you want to do that for?" You ask.

"Because I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I can't do that if I die in The Hunger Games."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying... run away with me."

You think about it for a moment. You love Gale so much, and it's true that you both can live in the forest, so really, what's stopping you?

"When should we leave?" You ask.

Gale smiles and kisses your forehead.

"Whenever you want to. When you're ready."

You nod and look out at the hills.

"What about our families?" You say.

"We can bring them with us."

"We can't do that."

"I know, but we can try."

"Gale, honestly, where are you going with this? You've never wanted to run away before, so why now?"

Gale sighs and then rips a strand of grass from the ground. He looks at you and raises your hand.

"Marry me."

"What??"

"Marry me. That's where I'm going with this. Let's get married."

"Gale, a-are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure in my life. I love you, (Y/N)."

You smile and lean in to kiss Gale. Then you pull back and wiggle your ring finger.

"Then I accept."

Gale smiles brightly and pulls you into a hug. When he pulls back he wraps the strand of grass over your ring finger, and you both plan on leaving the next morning.

That was crap. I'm sorry.
