"I hate Wonderland." Jefferson sighs, pulling you along and away from the smoke.
"Then how did you lose this 'thing' that you're getting?" You ask, "You'd have to have been here when you lost it."
Jefferson tightens his grip on your arm and you wince slightly at the pain. He stops walking as he looks over at you.
"I didn't lose h... it. It was taken from me."
"By whom?"
"The Queen of Hearts. She's a vile ruler who everyone here seems to adore. But she stole something very precious to me and banished me."
"I can see why you hate being here."
"I'm determined to get it back. Whatever it takes."
You stare at him as he says this. Does he mean he'll kill the Queen if it comes down to that? You hope not. You understand killing is a part of a life full of magic, but you'd hate to witness a murder, let alone commit one.
"You promised to help me," Jefferson starts.
"Not exactly."
"Excuse me?"
"I never promised to help you. I just agreed to tag along."
Jefferson becomes silent as he knows that's true. He grunts under his breath, pulls you forward, and begins to walk again. You follow beside him, both not saying a word, and continue to admire the magical aspect to Wonderland.
To you the place is absolutely amazing. There is so much in one world it seems to fill up the air. But Jefferson is glaring at every little spect of dust that flies. He'd grunt at an animal passing by, sigh when the wind would kick in, and roll his eyes at any heart in visibility.
These hearts were everywhere in Wonderland. As Jefferson told about the Queen of Hearts, you assume that these were her trademarks or her stamp on the world. Nearly everywhere you went you saw a heart. She's definitely not one for subtlety.
Before long you both reach an area where a labyrinth made of grass hedges begins in front of you both. Again, a heart was above the maze, symbolizing that the Queen owned it.
"We have to go through there?" You sigh.
"Yes. It's the only way to her majesty." Jefferson groans, being rude when taunting the Queen.
"Ok, then."
You fix your dress and then start to walk forward, of course more on the side so that there's room for Jefferson to walk beside you, but he quickly pulls you back towards him.
"Wait," he says, grabbing a stick from the ground, "don't touch the walls."
He throws the stick towards the grass hedges and it immediately gets swallowed by the leaves. The labyrinth is alive! You widen you eyes and then look at Jefferson.
"Follow me." He says, moving you to walk behind him.
You nod and follow him inside the maze. There are so many turns and corners that you start to get scared that you both may get lost, or worse be swallowed up by the walls.
Jefferson leads you throughout the labyrinth, making sure neither of you get close to the hedges. As he turns around another corner you can feel your legs beginning to tire. From day it has almost turned night, as the sun is beginning to set.
"Jefferson," you call from behind him.
He stops and turns around to look at you.
"How much further must we walk?"
