It had been months. The days after he had sent you away had passed in a blur for him. Klaus had lashed out in the for him familiar way, and Elijah had been sure that if you had still been around, you would have been used against him. As Klaus had used everyone's weak points, and even when Elijah hadn't admitted it, not to Klaus, not to anyone, you had been his weak point. Still was.
Which is why he found himself in front of the appartment you had rented after you had left New Orleans. You had disappeared from the city, making it hard for him to find you, but he did have resources practically no one else had. He knew it had been stupid to try to find you, but it was something he needed to do. He needed to know you were doing ok. And somehow he didn't know what outcome he wanted. Knowing you were miserable without him, or seeing that you had moved on and started a new life?
You had come home from work, and one moment you had thought that you saw movement, a familiar figure standing on the street, but when you blinked and looked again, it was gone. A figment of your imagination. So you grabbed the keys from your purse and opened the door, closing it behind you.
Elijah stepped out of the shadows. It had been close or he had betrayed himself, and he couldn't let that happen. As much as he missed you, he could see that you seemed to have a new life.
Little did he know about the feeling that there was something missing in that life. You had no idea what it was, but it seemed like there had to be someone filling that empty chair on the other side of the table. As if there had to be someone telling you you wouldn't have nightmares of creatures that couldn't exist.
Elijah didn't know. All he knew was that he was staring at your window for far too long, at the risk of someone thinking he was stalking you. With everything he had, he fought against the idea of just knocking on the door, taking you home. But he couldn't. He would never be able to. Because he would never be able to forgive himself if it would be your ruin. He always was.
"Stay safe, Y/N...", was all he could say before turning around and leaving you to live your life. A life where he didn't see a place for him.
