"Why do you do this?" Sebastian questioned as the two of you exited the orphanage an hour later.
"Why do we do anything? The reward," you answered, scraping your walking stick on the gravel. "These kids can become more than their upbringing and I intend to help them reach their greatest potentials. My reward is seeing their successes and they earn a better environment to learn what is needed to survive."
"Some are more promising than others," he commented dully, but you knew what he meant. Mainly, you were happy he was finally speaking his mind the way he should.
"Piper is on her way to being a brilliant lawyer," you revealed. "Appearances are deceiving; shouldn't you be well aware of that by now?"
Indeed, Sebastian should, but how did you infer such a thing? You were a cloaked figure as much as himself it seemed, yet he couldn't stop himself from picking apart each of your seams to unravel what was underneath. He felt himself becoming almost obsessed with uncovering the mystery that you were.
"You're correct," Sebastian replied, "but how do you find the time when you have many other commitments?"
"Already up to date with my schedule? Impressive," you praised sarcastically, causing Sebastian to smirk in the way he did. "Volunteering at the orphanage is a hobby and one must always make time for hobbies."
"Precisely."
You inquired, "What are your hobbies, Sebastian?"
Sebastian had never been asked the question and he didn't know if he was sure he could answer it. He was a demon who could do anything with precision and grace, but was there something he actually liked to do besides devouring souls?
"I like cats," he determined.
"I have a very fluffy Persian named Octavious, but my butler is a real insect when it comes to my cat."
If you could have captured the brightness in Sebastian's eyes, you would have. He got a peaceful expression on his flawless face that made you want to burst out laughing because of how amazed he was.
"My young Master is the same way, but more allergic," he mumbled.
He couldn't speak properly anymore. Sebastian was being overcome with... feelings. Maybe not those of very deep decent, but the feelings were predominant in the atmosphere between you. Sebastian glanced at you briefly and took in the way your hair fluttered around your face and how you walked in sync with your stick with content swagger.
He was weary mostly because you were so intelligent and independent compared to the rest of the people in the world, men and women alike. You were selfless in your other acts of kindness and the rumors heard about you were ludicrous to him now. Sebastian was almost connected to you, oddly enough, because he didn't mind being around you as you discussed different topics. He wasn't in love or anything as obscene as that, but he was interested in you each minute that past in an extraordinary way that he had never been before with another.
Being a demon meant being primarily isolated from the rest of the universe because demons couldn't get along with each other and they made meals out of humans. Perhaps that was why demons took the forms of animals and were occasionally fond of them.
"What troubles you, good sir?" you joked as you noticed Sebastian's far-off look.
Sebastian cleared his throat. "Nothing of concern; I was only thinking of how I should be getting back to my Master."
Lie.
You nodded anyway. "Well, it was a pleasure spending this evening with you, Sebastian. I hope we can do it again sometime. Also, if you need to tell Ciel, I'll be at the downtown hospital working until late."
"I'll be sure to inform him," the butler replied, putting a hand over his chest. "Thank you."
"For what?" you questioned curiously.
"For showing me that not all humans are self-centered creatures."
With that, Sebastian turned and walked away, then disappeared around a corner like a dark figure in the night or a whisper in the wind.
"You're welcome," you murmured under your breath, bowing your head slightly.
To your knowledge, Sebastian was still watching from an undisclosed location as you got into a carriage and set off for the hospital. You were aware that he would check to ensure you weren't lying before returning to the Phantomhive Manor with news of his journey.
When Sebastian arrived at the estate, his Master was eagerly awaiting his arrival.
"What took so long?"
"Complications, my Lord," Sebastian answered.
"Well, tell me everything," Ciel urged.
He did, excluding anything that would be too personal to share. There was something sacred, he felt, about what you told him and how you let yourself be utterly truthful. Sebastian didn't, for some unexplainable reason, want to voice and repeat what you had. None of it was important to the investigation anyway.
When the clock struck midnight and Sebastian was wandering the corridors in the dark, he proceeded to ponder you as thoroughly as possible with his extensive intellect. Perhaps he was giving you too much credit this entire time. Maybe he wasn't being cautious enough. He wasn't sure what the solution or the real problem was when it came to you anymore.
You were a special breed of your own, one Sebastian couldn't stop thinking about since he met you. He had a suspicion he knew what it was, but the idea seemed too farfetched to be believe. It was absurd and exceptionally ludicrous considering who and what you were. Your personality was outlandish and your attitude was even more laughable.
So, how could you, a human of all beings, be the one he's been looking for?
