Sebastian was baffled to know that this woman was his mate and the one he was supposed to be searching for his entire life. He heard stories of demons and angels alike who didn't actively search for their mates, but when they miraculously found them, they felt the deepest guilt in their nonexistent souls. That was surely how Sebastian felt now that he realized just how perfect you were for him.

You, (Y/N) (L/N), were just as sadistic as himself while also being the most compassionate and caring human he had met in his three thousand years. Sebastian never thought he would value such things, but you were the exception.

It wasn't the mating bond you shared, no, it was natural attraction. Sebastian had been unaware the entire time, then gradually wanted to be around you more and more. You intrigued him more than the Egyptian pyramids and held more beauty than a blooming flower and had more wit than a jester.

He admired you, but he wouldn't say he was in love. How could he feel such a thing even with his mate? Sebastian wasn't sure of that answer or if he could ever love at all, but he would try because he was irrevocably falling for you each time you spoke or crossed his mind (which was always).

"I don't think you can fix this," you told him as you sat on the edge of your bed with Sebastian next to you.

"I will do everything in my power to," he replied earnestly. "This world has never been fair to you, my dear, and I plan to ensure that you get what you want from now on."

"Who said I wanted it?" you said gently, almost in defeat.

Sebastian reached over, his gloves long gone, and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. "You don't have to say it; I can tell just by looking at you that you don't want to give up," he murmured.

You raised a brow at his action and pushed his hand away. "You may be my mate, but I'm not just going to jump in the sheets with you because of it."

Sebastian laughed demonically--the way his eyes glowed and he threw his head back reminded you of what he was. You didn't feel fear or shyness, though, because you knew you could take him to hell and back if the time came.

"I do not expect you to. You're not that kind of human, after all," Sebastian responded once he calmed down. "I am merely suggesting that we attempt to conserve what we have discovered and go from there. We should sort this out and take our relationship where ever it may go."

"It's inevitable that we will become close and fall in love," you said confidently. "Unless one of us breaks the bond now, there is no turning back from our fates. We will love and I will die at the hands of Claude. That is what we are destined for now, so I suggest you break it off with me now or face the consequences."

Sebastian made a face of disgust. "Why do you not break the bond then?"

You diverted your eyes quickly and were silent until you gathered the courage to answer with, "It won't work if I do it."

"But the only way for that to be true is if--"

"Yes," you interjected. "I realized how much I cared for you when I had to watch you look at me with such venom when you discovered what type of person I was. Since I have already developed such a yearning for you, I cannot break the bond."

"Neither can I," he claimed and leaned down to turn your face back to his, "because I have grown... fond of you as well."

You, again, made space between the two of you. You still weren't comfortable with anyone in such close proximity unless it was the children at the orphanage. Maybe it was because you were too scared to let anyone in in fear of them hurting you.

"Can demons only feel that for their mates?"

"Of course," he said, making it a point to flash his fuchsia eyes. "We don't feel love, hope, longing, or anything of the sort except for the one that was made for us."

"That must suck," you replied.

"It's in my nature."

You stood and began walking over to the large window where you were sure Sebastian came in from. The moonlight was still beaming through and the candles only added to the ominous situation.

"What about Ciel? What would happen to him?"

"We will cross that bridge when we come to it," Sebastian whispered, standing mere inches behind you. His tall frame was casting a long shadow over the room.

You pivoted toward him. "When the time comes, do not let him get hurt. He has faced more anguish than I, and if he is to cry at my demise, comfort him."

"That will not happen, I promise you," Sebastian mumbled.

"Do not make promises that you cannot keep."

Sebastian gathered your hands in his own and held them to his unbeating chest. You still felt the warmth of his skin and it sent tingles through your body like a magnetic charge that you had never experienced before. You longed for it to stay with you, but you knew that to be impossible.

"I never make promises to anyone, (Y/N), but if I to you, I mean it with the utmost sincerity. You are mine and will forever be, I assure you. No harm will come to you."

You sighed and peered at your mate with wonder and concern. How could he be so positive and sure of himself when your life was dangling in the balance? You envied Sebastian for that, but you also hope, for both your sakes, that he was right.
