The weeks following, you devoted most of your time to being at the orphanage. With the knowledge of Sebastian actually wanting some sort of relationship with you, it threw you off your main job, which was to care for those that were thrown aside. You believed yourself to be too caught up in yourself that it was distracting from what was truly important.

It wasn't that Sebastian wasn't important, it was that other things were important to you before he came along. You had priorities and responsibilities that could not be overshadowed by your mate.

"What's gotten into you?" Ruth questioned as you made your way to the orphanage.

"What do you mean?" you asked, unaware of the soft smile gracing your lips.

"You're... happy."

"Is that such a crime?"

"Yes, it is when you're the brooding type," she deadpanned.

You shrugged. "Going to the orphanage more makes me happy, okay? It reminds me to be grateful of what I have and humbled by the children."

Ruth gave you a look a of disbelief. "Really?" she challenged.

You nodded. "Really."

"You have been an awful liar since being a teen."

"We both know that is utterly falso, my dear Ruth," you claimed, opening the door for her when you arrived.

Ruth was skeptical as can be, and unbeknownst to you, she had a sneaking suspicion about what was really going on because she happened to be passing by your bedroom weeks previously to hear you speaking with a certain gentleman, but she was unaware of who it may have been.

When you entered the orphanage, you were confused to see Sebastian and Ciel already there. Ciel was obviously showing the children and talking about a new toy his company invented and it seemed he brought enough of the product for everyone. Sebastian, on the other hand, stood with a smile in the corner as he watched his Master be kind because of you.

"What are you guys doing here?" you asked, grinning.

"I thought we would give back as well," Ciel answered, standing and facing you. "This is important to you, (Y/N), and as your friend, I believe I should assist you in any way I can."

You chuckled. "Thank you. That's very sweet."

Ciel blushed lightly and quickly walked away, but to your surprise, he sat down next to Piper who was--for once--smiling and having a good time, especially when she saw Ciel. You knew Ciel was engaged to Lady Elizabeth Ethel Cordelia Midford, but you wondered if he was taking a page out of your book and swaying from the expected path in society. Piper, in your opinion, could definitely reign him in if need be.

"Hello, (Y/N)," Sebastian greeted, suddenly at your side.

"Him!?" Ruth whisper-yelled. It appeared that she instantly recognized his sultry voice. "I heard you two talking and I cannot comprehend why you would get involved with the Phantomhive--"

"Ruth, be quiet," you scolded. "Frankly, it is none of your business who I associate with, and I could easily fire you for eavesdropping outside of my chambers."

Ruth remained silent while realizing that you were right and what she had done was wrong, but that didn't stop her mind from conjuring up how wrong this was and how terrible it could become.

"I waited until you were here to check on Damien," Sebastian said calmly, disregarding Ruth altogether.

"Let's go," you replied, leading the way to the back room and leaving Ruth behind.

You were furious at her for getting involved in your personal matters once again. How dare she judge your choice in companion after she insisted heavily on you finding a partner? It was ludicrous and completely out-of-line from what she was hired to do. She could not preach marriage and companionship then not approve of who you wanted to be with. Perhaps she thought Sebastian was after your money.

You pushed open the creaky door and were immediately elated to see Damien sitting up in his bed reading. When he saw you, his eyes grew wide with excitement and he closed the book to put on his side table.

"(Y/N)!" he exclaimed.

"Hey, buddy!" you said cheerfully, sitting on the edge of the bed.

Damien gingerly crawled over to hug you and you gently embraced him in return. You picked him up, careful of the needles in his skin, and set him across your lap.

"Who's that?" Damien asked, shyly pointing to the tall demon.

"That's Sebastian. He's really nice," you assured.

"It is nice to finally meet the famous Damien," Sebastian said jokingly. "I heard much about you."

Damien giggled and it caused you to laugh. Sebastian observed the scene in interest. Your laugh made a feeling inside his gut that he had not felt before. This was the first time he had seen you almost absolutely carefree and happy and it made him want you to have moments such as this infinitely. It was clear that you loved Damien with all your heart and Sebastian wondered if you would care for him that way. He was not jealous, no, only intrigued.

"How are you feeling?" you questioned.

Damien frowned. "Better, but the big pains come and go. Am I going to always feel like this?"

You clenched your jaw and shook your head. You brought up a hand and lightly pushed away the strands of hair from his face like you'd done a million times before as Sebastian continued to look on silently.

"The thing about pain is that it makes you stronger," you muttered. "You have dealt with more struggle than you should for someone your age and I can only hope that I can become as strong as you, Damien. You are the bravest person I know and have more power than you could ever realize."

Damien hugged you again, sensing the tears you were holding back. You wished you could tell him that he would be okay and that he would live a long life, but you couldn't lie to him because of your own doubt. He didn't deserve to believe his dreams would come true simply because you told him he would be able to make them come true.

The only thing you could bring yourself to tell him was that you would do anything to save him, even if it cost you everything.
