Newt
I didn't know what to say to her. I had it all planned out in my head but now the time had come to tell her i couldn't think properly.
"Newt please just talk to me. And be honest I just want to sort whatever this is out" she told me and I knew I had to tell her everything.
"I felt like I had to prove myself to you. Prove I was worth something more than just some skinny boy who tried to kill himself"
I confessed to her. She looked almost upset and I knew I hit a nerve.
"Newt you didn't have to prove anything to me. You were my best friend and all I could ever want was for you to be happy"
"But you didn't want me as anything more than a friend and i hated that. I just wanted a chance"
I looked at her face in the firelight and her features looked confused.
"I would do anything for you. I care for you and feel for you so much more than anyone else. Don't repeat that to anyone" she laughed and I nodded. "I just want my best friend back Newt. Then we could build something up from there."
She offered and I smiled.
It wasn't exactly what I wanted but it was so much better than nothing. She turned her head to look at me slowly and I smiled at her.
"What?"
"Nothing" She said and still her face was contorted with confusion.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked not taking my eyes off of hers. She said nothing which was driving me crazy but I just watched her and waited before she said anything.
Slowly she reached her hand up, brushing my hair away from my forehead. She pressed her forehead to mine and I put my hand on the back of her hair. I pushed my nose to hers and she smiled shaking her head.
"Kiss me" I whispered as our lips brushed together. I felt her breath on my lips but again she shook her head and stood up walking away from where we sat.
"What the hell just happened?" I asked myself whilst leaning my whole weight on the log. I looked over my shoulder to see her giving me a smile before disappearing in the crowd of boys.

Thomas
"I'd quit the longing looks now greenbean" I heard a laugh from behind and snapped my head from looking at the girl to looking at who interrupted my thoughts.
"What are you talking about?" I asked the Asian boy stood infront of me. He held his hand out and I shook it out of politeness.
"Minho. The looks your giving her? We've all been there" he told me and I nodded. It was probably inevitable. One girl in a bunch of teenage boys.
"What's up with her and Newt?" I couldn't help but ask. I'd seen them talk privately a few times during the day but they didn't look to be happy with each other.
"To them it's complicated. She was the first one here, followed by him. They were inseparable until a year ago when something happened between them and they just grew distant. But I think they like each other" Minho told me and my inner attraction towards the girl growled at this.
"What happened?"
"It's not for me to tell you. It's personal to him. But I don't know why they grew apart one night. None of us heard" he shrugged as if it were nothing. But I wanted to know more. I started walking towards Newt who was still sat by the log when a hand wrapped round my wrist.
"Don't push him" Minho said raising his eyebrows and I nodded before continuing towards him.

"Can I sit?" I asked Newt as I stood above him.
"Of course! Here have some of this" he handed me a drink as I sat down and I took a sip. But immediately had to spit it back out as the liquid tasted so bitter.
"What the hell is that?!"
"No one knows. Gally makes it for nights like these" Newt told me before we ended up in silence.
"What's that noise?" I asked as a screech was heard from behind the grand stone walls.
"We call those grievers. No one has ever seen one and lived to tell about it. They're why we never stay in the maze over night. If your in the maze by the time those walls close, your a dead man" Newt explained and I gulped at the thought of these things.
"But during the day. And when those walls are shut you're safe" he sat hitting my leg with his hand.
I bet he wouldn't be being so friendly if I told him I was interested in getting closer to Faith.
"She makes sure we're safe" Newt finished nodding his head.
"Why does she get to be leader? If she's the only girl then shouldn't we be protecting her?" I questioned trying to get more information out of Newt about the girl.
"She's stronger than any of us. The box comes up with a new person each month. But she was first. She spent a month here on her own. Then I came along." He explained and I nodded.
"She looks younger than any of us" I stated and Newt nodded.
"I think she probably is younger by a year or so. Which is why she's the strongest. She had to grow up so quickly to survive in here and she did it. She must of been about fifteen when she came in here and I think I was around sixteen. But it's why everyone likes her. She's young but she's strong, she's still the baby apart from Chuck and we'd all do anything to save her if it came to it. I think it's incredible how, I'm guessing, a younger girl can control these older boys. Including myself."
"What was it like? Just you two?"
"Honestly it was good. She was the best friend I could ever ask for. We're not like that now. I think both of our minds are just a little fried" Newt laughed and I could see from just looking at his face he was disappointed he lost her and obviously cared for her. "Now that's enough questions for one night let me show you around" Newt offered helping me to stand up.

He was taller than me and probably better looking, and I had to admit he was the nicest one I've met in here, which made it horrible for me that I had an interest in Faith.
He led me around the different groups of people and we finished where Faith stood with Minho and a few others.
"And these are the runners. Minho, he's the keeper" Newt explained and I looked towards Faith.
"You're a runner?" I asked her and she shrugged.
"When I have the time I run but mostly I just leave it up to these guys" She smiled and I nodded. "So Thomas, how have you got on understanding it all?"
"As best as I can." I smiled and she let off a little laugh as did Newt who was the other side of me. "You've done a good job setting all this up"
She blushed and smiled nodding her head. "It wasn't easy. We've lost a lot of boys to confusion and panic but for the most of it, the days are peaceful" she told me and I knew what she meant.
If I had run into that maze out of panic I would probably be dead by now. I wasn't so much panicked but something within me had to find a way out. There has to be a way and I'm going to help find it.
"Well I think that's enough for one night. Come one let's wrap it up!" She yelled and all the boys said their good nights and went into their hammocks. "Oh! Thomas follow me" Faith said running back to me.
I walked with her to a larger building and she pushed open doors.
"Newt?" She knocked on the first door. "Newt!" She said louder before he swung open the door without his top on. No wonder she liked him more.
"What do need?" He asked and looked up at me.
"There's no more hammocks left and I know that there's a spare,"
"Yes he can sleep in here. Just for tonight though. I'll get a hammock set up tomorrow" Newt said and she smiled at him walking into the room.
There was a small bed against a wall and a little bed type mattress on the floor with a blanket over it.
"Night" Faith said giving Newt a hug and he kissed the top of her head. "Night Thomas. Try and get some sleep" she said before walking through another door to what I'm guessing was her room.

"You fancy her?" I heard from Newt who stood next to me.
"I don't know I mean she's pretty but I wouldn't want to risk it"
"It's hard for her to be in a relationship. She said she can't deal with loosing any of us. You'll have to get in line though mate. I've been trying for two years" He sighed and getting into his bed.
Nothing more was said and I lay on the straw thinking about who put us in here, and how we were going to get out. Thoughts like that distracted me from thoughts of her. Which was probably what I needed.
