You awoke with sleep weighing heavy on your eyes. Tossing and turning all night had taken its toll on your body. You felt like garbage. You rolled to your side and sat still for a moment. Giving your brain some time to wake up. You could hear your mom downstairs making breakfast. You let out an audible groan as you sat up. You could feel a breeze coming from your open window. You got out of bed and strolled over to your window and closed it tight. Still not fully awake yet. You put on some comfy yoga pants and a pullover sweatshirt. You left your hair an untamed mess. As you made your way downstairs you noticed your mother and sister looked just as disheveled this morning. Due to yesterday's events no doubt. Not much was said as you all ate your breakfast. You and your sister said quick goodbyes and headed to school.
Once you got to school you immediately found Dib. You wanted to talk about yesterday. "Hey, Dib!" You waved, smiling. "Hey!" Dib replied with just as much enthusiasm. "I'm glad to see you look just as good as I do this morning" you joked as you noticed Dib looked just as messy and untamed as you this morning. "Yeah, yesterday took a lot out of me. I'm still exhausted" he replied groggily. "I agree, I can't believe anyone even came to school today" you replied. "Since Zim showed up this kind of became our new normal, I guess everyone is just used to it" he replied nonchalantly. "That makes sense" you said. You both made your way to class, walking at a much slower pace than normal.
Everyone in Ms. Bitters class seemed to be unbothered by yesterday's events. The usual classroom chatter echoed off the walls. You and Dib both walked to your seats. You both took notice of the fact that Zim was nowhere to be seen. "Must have been a tiring day for him too," you thought to yourself. You took your seat and began to get out the previous nights schoolwork. You had finished in a rush, so you hoped it would be enough. Ms. Bitters was slow to enter the classroom. When she did, she had an unusual scowl on her face. "Class" she started in her usual unflattering voice. "In light of recent events, the school has organized a camping trip for the class. All those who wish to attend must have the permission slip signed by a parent. We will be going to a nearby national forest, accompanied by the forest rangers. If you have any questions, don't ask." She ended in a groveling voice.
"A camping trip?" I asked Dib at lunch. "I can't believe it either" he said munching on some interesting looking nuggets. "Seems like a terrible idea considering the entire city was almost destroyed yesterday, who knows what could happen!" I said as I eyed my food. "Who knows what Zim will be up to when he hears about this. Do you plan on going?" Dib asked. "Of course, if Zim does get up to something we need to be there" I replied. "Good idea. I'm sure we will know more about his plans when he comes back to school" he said triumphantly. I snickered in reply while I tried to choke down my food.
School went by in a flash. My permission slip for the trip was signed by mom after much convincing. The attack on the city had her rattled. She wasn't convinced the trip would be safe. In reality, neither was I. I convinced myself that the best way to protect her and my sister was to go along and prevent Zim from doing anything harmful. Last thing we needed was another attack on the city. I for one, was still mentally exhausted from the last attack. I couldn't stop replaying Zim saving me. The look in his eyes seared into my memory. It didn't make sense. Zim eventually showed back up to classes. He seemed thrilled about the idea of getting out of the classroom. I wasn't sure if this made me nervous or not. On one hand if he was at the camping trip with us he couldn't take down the city. On the other, he could do something terrible to get rid of us in the middle of the woods. Only time would tell which was bound to happen.
