The battle had stopped. No one moved or even said a word.
Harry Potter dropped to his knees, his whole body limp, and his face hit the ground. Everyone around him cried out in horror. The only ones cheering was Voldemort and his faithful follower Bellatrix, who had also stopped fighting along with Ron and Hermione to see what had happened.
"Harry!"
Everyone around were screaming his name. McGonagall, Sirius, his parents, the Weasleys. All of them screamed hoping he would wake up and it would all be a dream. Dumbledore, who had rounded up the last of the Death Eaters, turned to see his unmoving body and his twinkling eyes turned dark. He did not mourn, however, but matched Voldemort's gaze. The Dark Lord had fallen to his knees for the second time already, his mouth hanging open, as though something stabbed his heart. Nevertheless, he kept his red eyes on Dumbledore, and the pain quickly vanished into an evil smile.
"You see Dumbledore?" he challenged. "I have done it! I have killed Harry Potter!"
"And I'll kill you!"
James fired a curse at Voldemort but he blocked it, his smile widening even more. Bellatrix tried to curse him but was Disarmed. She turned to see who had done it and Neville Longbottom was the only one who had his wand raised at her. Instead of casting another spell to finish her off directly, he turned his wand to behind her and cast one on the ground behind her. The roots of the ground instantly came to life and grabbed Bellatrix's ankles, tightening its grip so she could not move. The roots began to grow and slowly grabbed firm of her whole body, pulling her towards the ground underneath. Within seconds, the crazed Death Eater was completely submerged underground.
"You all still dare fight me!?" Voldemort tried to blast James.
James did not react in time and the curse hit him right in the chest. It did nothing but made him step back a bit. Voldemort, bewildered, tried the Cruciatus Curse on him but James did not react. Shocked though he was that he was not affected, he kept his eyes on Voldemort, as though challenging him to try even harder.
"Impossible!" Voldemort exclaimed.
"Just wait Tom," Dumbledore said calmly. "You will see."
The still body of Harry Potter began to move. No one else moved, however, for complete shock overcame them. What they thought was a dead Harry Potter, was now standing up and wiping his glasses clear. He stood straight, facing Voldemort with his wand poised. This time, it was Harry that smirked, mirroring his father's mischievous look.
"Try it again Tom," Harry said. "Try to kill me one more time. See if it works this time."
Voldemort looked at Dumbledore, then at James and Lily, and then at Harry again. He could not believe his eyes. His army, all gone and defeated. He had nothing with him. Nothing to be proud of. His own dignity had failed him. And right there, in front of everyone, he was nothing but the Tom Riddle with the ambition to become the most powerful wizard in the world, now powerless.
"Its over Tom," Dumbledore said again.
Voldemort, in one last moment of fury, raised his wand at Harry and he did the same. Together, they shouted their curses.
"AVADA KEDAVRA!"
"EXPELLIARMUS!"
Voldemort fell. The Elder Wand rolled away from his hand. He did not move, and for a few seconds, no one knew what had happened. Then, someone cheered. And following that was the whole crowd of fighters that cheered. As reality began to hit them, about how the Dark Lord had finally fallen, everyone screamed and yelled at the top of their lungs, elated at having won the war.
The battle was over.
Harry sunk to his knees, dropping his wand as well and staring at Voldemort's body. Dumbledore was the first to approach him, with Ron and Hermione doing the same.
"I am so proud of you Harry," Dumbledore said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "So very proud."
Ron and Hermione said nothing. They both sank to their knees and hugged him tightly. Slowly, everyone else began walking up to him. First, the entire Weasley family, followed by Ginny, Luna and Neville. And then the Head of Houses. And everyone else that had fought for him.
The only ones that stayed apart were the Marauders.
Harry got up and walked over to where James, Sirius, Remus and Lily were seated. Lily had her head laying on James' lap while Sirius and Remus sat next to each other, none of them saying anything to each other. When Harry arrived, they all gave him a large, warm smile.
"You knew we had come?" Sirius asked.
Harry nodded, "Dumbledore told us."
"Ron said you had gone through someone's memories," Remus said. "Whose was it?"
"Snape's," Harry said. "I went into Dumbledore's office with Ron and Hermione and the Pensieve was just sitting there. I think he might have left it there in case he never made it back."
Lily stared over at Snape's dead body, lying in front of Nagini.
"What did you see?" James asked.
"The truth," Harry replied, with nothing else. He sank to the ground and sat down next to his father.
Remus and Sirius looked at each other, before looking into the Forbidden Forest to see Peter Pettigrew hiding. He had survived the battle, though in their eyes, he would have been dead by now. Sirius was growing restless at the sight of him but Remus grabbed his arm, stopping him from doing anything reckless.
"So..." James started. "When Voldemort tried to kill you and you... 'died'... that was meant to happen?"
Harry nodded and so James continued, "And me...why couldn't he hurt me?"
Remus was the one that answered, "Love."
Harry nodded again, agreeing with Remus.
"The same way Lily protected Harry," Remus continued. "Out of love. Harry sacrificed himself not because he had to, though that might have been a factor. He did it because he couldn't bear to see anyone else die for him. Right?"
Harry didn't reply this time so Sirius butted in, "Wow now I can see why you are a teacher."
Harry turned around and on the other side of the Forbidden Forest, sat Narcissa Malfoy, leaning against a tree. Harry could see the pain in her face as she sat there all alone, not having any family to be with. Standing up, he walked over to her.
"He saved me," Harry said to her once he was close enough. "Back at Malfoy Manor. Your son saved me."
"And is that supposed to solve everything?" Narcissa asked, her voice trembling.
"I'm sorry-"
"No you're not," Narcissa interrupted, standing up to face Harry. "I heard about what Draco has done to you in the past. But he was never an evil person."
"I know," Harry replied.
"Then you know he didn't deserve to die," Narcissa began to cry. "My only son. He didn't choose to fight like you. All he wanted, just like Lucius, was for all of this to be over. My only family. Where am I to go now? All these people, they fought for you, and you saved them from the Dark Lord. But look around. Not everyone made it did they? You may be a hero to them, but to me, you're nothing."
She began to turn around and leave as Harry looked back at the battle remains, where Lucius lay dead not too far away from them. Turning back one last time, Narcissa's eyes met Harry's.
"My family is dead, Potter, and I blame you."
