"Thanks for waiting! Next up is... these guys! We caught a glimpse of their weird relationship in the obstacle course, but what will happen now?"
Taking in a deep breath, Y/n stomped their feet. The energy gathering in their legs made their heart beat even faster. Sweat already coated their face and palms.
On the other side of the cement ring was their opponent. His eyebrows were tightly pulled forward, a noticable grimace on his face.
"Let's welcome back the flying squirrel from the first event, L/n Y/n of the hero course!"
Y/n held their hands behind them then pulled them up to stretch their upper back. "The squirrel part is unnecessary..." they sighed.
"Taking second, then first in the prelims! You're way too strong, kid! He wasn't recommended for admission for nothing! Also from the hero course, Todoroki Shoto!"
He stood completely still, his eyes boring through Y/n.
"And now, for the second match of the finals! Ready... START!"
Y/n was the first to move, using the energy they just stored to separate themself from the ground and move closer in one go.
"What bold movements from the squirrel! It's that the only option for this matchup?"
Now falling from their jump, Y/n pulled an arm back.
If they could get close enough...
If they could repel all the energy...
If it could blow him out of bounds...
"Sorry..." he said, his voice clearly strained and devoid of any real remorse. He kicked out his heel, ice bursting out.
It covered the entire ground of the ring in the blink of an eye then built upon itself to trap Y/n just above him.
They blinked, the sensation of the ice holding their skin starting to burn. Their eyes slowly moved from left to right. He created a glacier that spread over half the stadium before they could reach him. The thunderous crackling settled, silencing the previously ecstatic stadium.
His body was covered in frost and a bit of ice. As he glared up at Y/n, he let out a breath that was visible from the cold.
"L/n, can you move?" Midnight shakily asked, also half covered in ice.
Their teeth violently chattered against each other, Y/n stuttered out, "Of... course not..."
"L/n is immobilized!" she announced, holding up her whip. "Todoroki advances to the second round!"
He didn't react. Todoroki's face was still angry.
"This..." Y/n grumbled. Their cheeks were warm despite the ice. "This is too much..."
The crowd joined together in a chant. "Don't worry about it!" they called. It was nice, but didn't soothe Y/n's embarrassment.
Todoroki walked forward. "Sorry. I went overboard." He placed his left hand on their stomach. Finally, he looked away from them for the first time since they met for the match. An extreme warmth crawled through Y/n, causing steam to rise. "I was angry."
"Woah! Now that's recommendations for you! We will have to take a short break before the next match to melt all this ice!"
"I... I don't even have the right to be angry," Y/n muttered. Their head drooped to their side. "You're just that much better..."
Todoroki stayed quiet.
Throwing their head forward, Y/n squeezed their eyes shut, "But, it still fucking sucks..."
His eyes turned to them.
"And your dad too! He pisses me off!" they started rambling. "I don't know what his problem with me is, but he didn't have to call me inferior to my face. He's right--since I lost--but that's still so fucking annoying!"
His eyes narrowed again. "You... spoke to my old man?"
"He's the one that ran into me," Y/n said, avoiding his irritated expression. "And he was rude first. I wouldn't have said anything if he wasn't such a prick."
Todoroki's entire body relaxed. His frown let up into a blank expression. "He can be a bit annoying."
Y/n's arm pulled free from the melted ice. They were covered in a bit of water, but it was better than being unable to move. "At least you understand." Breaking their feet out, Y/n stumbled to the ground.
"Perhaps this was too much," He said, looking up at the rest of his ice structure.
Y/n shrugged. "You're the one who made it. Have fun cleaning up."
Leaving the ring, Y/n welcomed the loneliness of the halls. Their match was the perfect reminder that they shouldn't get too comfortable at U.A. It was just a means to bring Hitomi back, and hopefully knock some sense into her.
They were going to be Her hero. She always needed one. Winning the sports festival didn't effect that too much.
It didn't matter.
But, why?
Why did their eyes burn? Why did their nose sting? Their jaw was clenched and their eyebrows furrowed. The excessive water in their eyes began to blur their vision. Why?
"Why...?" they muttered, their throat so tight that it hurt. Pulling their sleeve over their hand, Y/n swiped it under their dribbling nose. "I don't... stand a chance..."
The water from their eyes slid down their cheek. The droplet swiftly curved over then down their face, dripping from their chin to the floor.
"I'm so weak here!" they admitted, more tears flowing from their eyes. They ran down their cheeks, nose, lips and chin. All met their fate once dropping to the ground. "I used to be... so strong... I was-I was actually helpful..."
Their breath hiccuped. "Why?" they yelled into their hands. "Why... am I so useless here?" Their nails sunk into whatever they could grasp. A dull sting rung throughout their body, but it couldn't compare to the tightness in their chest.
Why am I so disappointing?
Why am I so stupid?
Why am I so weak?
Why can't I be better?
Why me?
