Sitting on the steps to the playground, the two friends leaned in close together. Both were entirely fascinated by the object sat in front of them. Although it was their free time, the two enjoyed sitting and staring at what was in front of them.
"My mom let me buy these with my cash gift," Hitomi said. She sat with her knees brought up to her chest. Her sky blue curls reached her back now since she had refused to cut it. A plastic headband pushed the stray hairs from her face. "Where should we plant them?"
Y/n looked to their friend. They stared at her bright eyes that matched her hair, then turned back to their newly acquired treasure. "I don't know," they shrugged. Hitomi was always the one with ideas. She always told them what to do.
Picking up the packet of seeds, Hitomi cradled them in her hands. "I don't have anywhere in our building," she said. "Mom said it needs lots of sun, but there's only shadows at home."
"Oh..." Y/n said. They dragged their finger over the dirt in front of them, drawing out small shapes.
"I wanted to plant it on the roof so we could have a flower house, but Dad said that wouldn't work. He said the flowers are afraid of heights and wouldn't like being on the roof," she rambled.
Y/n hummed in response. They picked a blade of grass and tore it apart. "You don't have a garden?"
"No. Everything we planted there died," she huffed, holding the seeds to her heart. "I don't want these flowers to die! They're my favorite."
"What about here?" they questioned, pointing to the shady area across the park. "Those flowers are already growing, so these ones will grow too. Plus, your flowers won't get lonely."
Jumping up, Hitomi cheered, "N/n, you're a genius!"
Pulling Y/n along with her, Hitomi ran to the area they pointed out. She used her hands to dig a shallow hole, and tossed the seeds in. Then, she patted the dirt back over the seeds.
"They're going to be so pretty," she said, proud of the little mound left.
"Yeah..." Y/n said. "How long until they grow?"
"I don't know," Hitomi admitted, her round cheeks a bit red. "We should check up on them everyday to make sure they grow up nice and healthy!"
But they never sprouted. As the days passed and the weather grew warmer, there was no sign from the buried seeds. Y/n still checked the spot from time to time, even if there was no hope left after several years.
Even when Y/n no longer blindly held on to Hitomi. When Hitomi replaced the blue of her hair for a gentle brown. When her eyes captivated the entire student body. When Y/n had to fight against the poison from Hitomi's smile. When they were called "Quirkless".
She made it a public event. Suddenly shouting in the lunch room about Y/n's attitude.
"You never listen to me anymore!" she yelled, her eyes brimming with tears. Her freshly cut bangs fell over her eyes. Y/n could still see some of the dye stained on her hairline.
Uncomfortable with the sudden attention, Y/n looked away from her. Out of habit, Y/n often avoided her eyes. "I do listen," they said, keeping their voice down. "You just seem a bit different. Like, you're struggling."
"What would you know? You're always with Shiro now!" she said, her voice cracking.
"He's having a hard time with his last year at elementary." They continued to control their tone. "I thought you wanted me to help?"
"How could you help me?" she scoffed. Her eyes glinted from her Quirk, "You can't understand me when you're such... such a-a freak! You're such a freak that I'm your only friend!"
"Oh... But I thought..."
"Even though I was nice enough to let you be my friend, you took it for granted," she continued. Sympathetic murmurs could be heard from the crowd that had formed. "Now that you got what you wanted, you must think that you can walk all over me! But I'm not letting you!"
"I didn't want anything from you, Hitomi," Y/n pleaded. "Why are you acting like this? What happened?"
Her eyes grew wide, a smile showing through her pained expression. "Because I'm not letting a Quirkless nobody ignore me."
"Quirkless? You know-"
"No one here will let you get away with this," she grinned, her eyes glowing as she glanced around the room. "They will teach you to behave. You won't be able to ignore me anymore."
One of the upperclassmen stepped forward, grabbing Y/n's shoulder.
"Whatever it takes..." she muttered, pushing back her bangs.
He struck Y/n's face, already leaving a mark. The energy ripped through their muscles, rushing to their arm. Turning their body along with their flying fist, Y/n hit his abdomen. The energy released and forced him back.
Staring at their fist, Y/n's breathing sped up. That was the first time they punched someone. Hitomi was always the one to protect them. She always got physical as Y/n stood to the side and questioned if it was alright to do so.
Now, they had just used their Quirk on another student.
How could they?
Too much energy could seriously injure someone. Middle school kids weren't supposed to be getting beat up with supercharged attacks. The upperclassmen was struggling for air after being hit.
"You were always so violent," Hitomi said, standing with her hands on her hips. "But violence can't solve all of your problems."
But it seemed to. No one could be reasoned with after Hitomi spoke to them. Every aggressive follower that claimed to be her messenger was easily deterred as Y/n used their Quirk to stay afloat.
Those flowers never bloomed, and Y/n didn't care to check on them anymore.
Their Quirk was enough.
It was reliable.
And it was strong.
What happened?
