"Neveremore was founded in 1791 to educate people like us." Enid told the twins as the walked down the stairs that led to a hall filled with students, "Outcasts, freaks, monsters, fill in your favourite marginalized group here."
"You save the sanitized sales pitch. I don't plan on staying here for long." Wednesday replied, stopping in front of Enid.
"Why not?" Enid asked. Iris sighed, knowing where this was going.
"This was my parents' idea." Her sister replied, glancing at a photo that was placed beside a trophy, "Oh look, there's my mothee smirking at me. They've been looking for any excuse to send me here. It's all a part of their nefarious yet completely obvious plan."
"What plan?" Enid asked excitedly.
"To turn me into a version of themselves. And to have Iris basically ignire her powers." Wednesday deadpanned.
"Well, in thar case, perhaps you could clear something up." Enid said, beginning to walk down the hallway, the two sisters following after her, "Rumour's been swirlung that you killed a kid at your old school, and your parents pulled strings to get you off. And then they pulled Iris out of the school because they could."
"Actually, it was two kids, but who's counting?" Wednesday walked off, leaving Enid standing with Iris. The blonde gave her a scared look, and Iris just shrugged her shoulders, smirking.
"That's Wednesday for you." She said, running to catch up with her sister, Enid scurrying after her.
They eventually reached a set of double doors, Enid pushing then open to reveal many students walking around or sitting at picnic benches. There was a dead tree in the middle of a fountain, students lounging on the rock edge that surrounded it. Iris kept to the left of her sister, Enid on Wednesday's right.
"Welcome to the quad." Enid said, holding her arms out.
"It's a pentagon." Wednesday stated.
"The whole snarky goth girl thing may have worked at normie school, but here things are different." Enid said, turning to face Wednesday, and then looking back to the quad, "Let me give you a wiki on Nevermore's social scene." She started walking around the quad, the two walking after her.
"I'm not interested in participating in tribal adolescent clichés." Wednesday said, "Although I cannot say the same for Iris."
"Well, then use it to fill you obviously bottomless pit of disdain." Enid replied, looking at Wednesday, and then smiling at Iris, "There are many flavours of outcasts here, but the four main cliques are Fangs, Furs, Stoners and Scales.
She waved a hand at a group sitting at one of the benches that were placed in the quad, "Those are the Fangs, AKA vampires. Some of them have literally been here for decades."
"Well, at least that means they won't fail history." Iris sighed, folding her arms.
"Oh! That reminds me, Principal Weems asked me to be your tutor, so I'll draw you up a revision timetable later." Enid said smiling at her, before walking off, away from the vampires.
"That bunch of knuckleheads are Furs, AKA werewolves. Like me!" Enid said, wlaking past another table that a bunch of students with a lot of hair were sitting at. The group howled at them as they walked past, obviously greeting Enid, "Full moons can get pretty loud around. That's when Furs, like, wolf out. I suggest you pick up noise-cancelling headphones."
"I'm assuming Scales are sirens?" Wednesday asked nochalantly.
"You catch on quick." Enid replied, "And that girl, Bianca Barclay, is the closest thing Nevermore has to royalty."
The watched as Bianca swirled her hand in the water, the back if her hand turning into scales. "Although her crowns been slipping lately." Enid said, making sure they knew all the gossip, "She used to date our resident tortured artist, Xavier Thorpe. But they broke up at the beginning of the semester. Reason: Unknown."
"Fascinating." Wednesday replied, obviously trying to be sarcastic, but Enid clearly didn't catch on.
"I know, right?" She said eagerly, "My blog is like, the number one source for Nevermore gossip."
"Yo, Enid!" A voice behind them said. Iris turned to see a beanie-clad boy with snake sneaking out from underneath looking at them, "You're not gonna believe the dirt I heard about your new roomates. One of them eats human flesh. Totally chowed down on that kid she murdered. You better watch your back. And the other one can go invisible!"
Enid stepped aside to reveal the two sisters, Wednesday glaring at him, "Quite the contrary. I actually fillet the bodies of my victims, then feed them to my menageria of pets."
"Ajax, these are my new roommates, Wednesday and Iris." Enid said, introducing the three to eachother.
"Woah." Ajax gaped, looking Wednesdya and then Iris up and down, "You're in black and white. Like a living Instagram filter. And you are, like, total opposites."
It was true, Iris and Wednesday were nothing like the other. Anyone could see that. Wednesday preferred to wear dark colours, normally black, and Iris lighter colours, such as pale blues, pale purples or beige. Wednesday preferred clithes the right size, whereas Iris liked hers at least a size too big. Iris hated talking to people, Wednesday didn't. One thing they could both agree on though, was no physical touch.
"Ignore him. Gorgons spend way to much time getting stoned." Enid said, pushing Ajax out of the way as she saw Iris grow uncomfortable at the mention of invisibility, "He's cute but clueless. You know, it's a small school and there wasn't much online about you two. You should really get on Insta, Snapchat and TikTok."
"I find social media to be a soul-sucking voic of meaningless affirmation." Wednesday said, turning around and walking away. Iris went to follow her, but Enid pulled her back.
"Why didn't you tell me you could go invisible?" She asked, "That's so cool!"
"I can't really control it yet." Iris admitted. Enid nodded, her mouth in an 'O' shape. Iris quickly hurried after her sister, following her up to the dorm where they got dressed into their uniform to go bid farewell to their parents and brother.
