It had been three days since Huma and Hanan's visit to Nausheen's house.
Huma couldn't help but bring up Nausheen and Barkat every time she and Hanan talked, much to his discomfort.
He had learned about Barkat's divorce from his mother, and his mind kept drifting back to the image of her, along with Azra and Anam, playing so freely in the yard.
Every time he tried to focus on his studies, it was as if her face kept appearing in his thoughts.
Hanan sat in the college library, staring at his book but not reading a word.
His fingers drummed lightly on the desk, but all he could think about was the past few days-Barkat's presence, her gentle smile, and how something about her had stirred a sense of longing inside him.
He sighed deeply, trying to push the thoughts away, when suddenly, he felt someone standing right in front of his table.
He looked up, startled, to see a girl standing there with a wide smile on her face.
The smile, though large, looked a little too forced for Hanan's liking.
"Can I sit here?" she asked, her voice sweet but just a little too sweet.
Hanan wasn't interested in any kind of interaction at that moment.
He just wanted to focus on his studies.
But out of respect, he nodded slightly.
She beamed and took a seat across from him, her eyes never leaving his face.
"Hii, myself Sadia," she said, extending her hand.
Hanan, slightly irritated, merely nodded and went back to his book, trying to ignore her.
But Sadia wasn't deterred.
She looked at him for a moment before she noticed the lack of attention and, sensing an opportunity, she moved a bit closer.
Her hand rested on his, just briefly.
Hanan looked up in surprise, pulling his hand away quickly and focusing on his book again.
He couldn't believe what was happening. His face flushed slightly, and his patience wore thin.
Sadia, undeterred, spoke again, her voice now a little more insistent. "Hanan, can we talk?"
"No," he replied bluntly, trying to return to his studies.
She was visibly upset but pushed further, her tone growing more persistent. "But why?"
"Because I don't know you," he said flatly, without looking up from his book.
Sadia blinked in surprise, her eyes widening. "What? Are you serious? We're in the same class."
Hanan looked up at her for a moment, his expression showing he had no idea who she was. "Oh, well, I didn't notice you in class. Sorry," he said casually, turning back to his book.
She seemed taken aback but then gathered her composure.
"I like you, Hanan," she said suddenly, and Hanan's head shot up in shock.
"What?" he said, his voice coming out more surprised than he had intended.
"I like you," Sadia repeated, her eyes now watching him closely, waiting for a response.
He stared at her for a moment, before giving a short, firm answer. "Listen, Miss, I don't know you, and this conversation is going nowhere."
Without saying another word, he slammed his book shut and stood up, ready to leave.
